Sports Gambling In Japan

So with sports gambling in Japan being legal, what’s to prevent a rikishi from discretely calling in to a sports site and placing a bet on himself or other rikishi?

The fact that once he gets found out - and rikishi don't seem to be masters of subtlety - he is finished.

Along with @Seiyashi's point, while I don't know that it's the case in Japan, it's worth remembering that in many jurisdiction where sports betting is allowed, match fixing remains a crime - which can extend to prohibiting any bets being placed by participants even if it's on themselves (though of course this varies from jurisdiction to jurisdiction).

Even in China, coaches placing bets on their own team to win is heavily frowned upon, and that's a culture where morals in the face of profit tend to mean a bit less than in other places. I know esports teams - or at least their coaches - that have gotten in trouble for that.

But isn’t gambling on sports illegal in Japan? Or has that changed? I mean, can you go into a place and bet on sports, not virtually? Is betting via the internet legal now for Japanese citizens? Specifically, betting on baseball,  soccer/ football and sumo?

Gambling is illegal IN Japan, any provider within the country would be prosecuted, if he gets found out. There may be workarounds that avoid direct gambling for money, like the pachinko model with some prizes you can sell again nextdoor. I guess the article is complete nonsense, definitely completely misleading.

Japanese gambling from Japan at foreign sites have to be careful to hide their winnings.

That article appears to be full of crap and besides implying things about sportsbetting in Japan that plainly aren't true, it either intentionally or unintentionally blurs the line between "sports in Japan that people [not necessarily Japanese] bet on" and "sports [not necessarily in Japan] that Japanese people bet on". Well, at least one person believed it, so job done I guess.
