Preparations of the masses- July 2022

Recommended Posts

I just want to say that ever since Kintamayama posted one of these threads a long time ago with the title "Preparation of them asses" I cannot unsee it. Now I'm doomed to think about asses every time I see this thread.

This was my contribution for today. Thank you. (Thinkingindepth...)

There’s a strange connection- sumo and asses? How on earth are they even remotely connected?? How could anyone watching sumo be reminded of asses?? And there I go, making the weird connection, killing it for everyone.. (Laughing...)(Laughing...)(Laughing...)(Laughing...)(Laughing...) (Kidding, kidding, joking, kidding..)

Kiribayama is aiming for a third straight double-digit win basho. "The long awaited degeiko was great. It's going to be a bout a day so I will be properly doing it. I'm properly thinking of doing my own sumo, win or lose. I was able to face many types of rikishi doing all kinds of sumo- oshi, tsuppari ,etc.  and I managed to deal with each one of them. Today i had my usual 15 bouts or so against the young ones," he said.

Daieishou is in full training mode. "It goes without saying that I am aiming upwards and I truly want to get there, but I've only  had one double-digit win basho (on the way up..) now, so..  I don't want to rush things and hope to go about the basho as usual," he said. He hasn't arrived in Nagoya yet and is training at the heya's location in Saitama. Today he faced Endou,  Tobizaru, Tsurugishou and Daiamami for 15 bouts. "I think I'm training well. It's hot in Nagoya so I will be monitoring my body properly, " he added. This will be his second basho as a sekiwake. The first time around he went 5-10. "I planned on going about it as usual but I was overthinking things, I guess..The difference between then and now is that I am still planning on going about it as usual but I'm already used to that feeling, so this time it's going to be different," he said in closing.

Does anyone else sense he may be going about it as usual?

I suspect he is being about the usual way in the usual way.

(Yes, that was a very mangled ABOFAL reference.)

The key point, subtle and nuanced , is that he will use a different usual.  It's so 4D level strategizing that I don't think the other Sanyaku will pick up on it until too late; I predict a lot of face-palming at the end of Nagoya 2022.

Addendum- Kiribayama also spoke about his weight. "I'm about 140 kilos. Should I up it to 145? Looking at my Oyakata (ex-Kirishima) he was quite well built and around that weight. I don't see any point in needlessly putting on weight. Watching his old bouts, I'm convinced I don't need to put on any more kilos.. I will gambarize while aiming to be like my Oyakata in his active days (muscles and all). I'm not there yet, but I hope to get there," he said.

Is Onosho healthy for this basho? I haven't seen anything about him training (unless I missed it).

I don't think it's just this basho. I don't really see very many keiko reports out of Onomatsu - at least not the ones Kintamayama reposts - and he's not been high profile for a very long time. The last time he had any attention was that horrendous consecutive double-digit loss streak a year or so back.

I was thinking of taking a gamble and picking him for one of my bench sumo slots. He hasn't been in the teen Maegashira range since 2019. He's not the most consistent but I hope he can bounce back.

I'm glad you asked-he is returning form a fractured rib injury and has been training. He faces his good friend Nishikifuji the newbie on day 1. "We've been friends since high school and have faced each other numerous times, so I'm really glad," he said. They grew up together and he even slept over at Nishikifuji's place, as he was living at a dormitory at the time while Nishikifuji lived in his own house. "His mother took care of me back then and I am grateful," explained Ounoshou. He trained at home today against three Makushita rikishi and was 22-3. "I have been properly doing what I should be doing," he divulged. He was injured last basho on day 5 in his bout against Takakeishou. '"As we fell, he hit my ribs with his knee. I was afraid of possible internal injuries so I took the rest of the basho off. At first the pain was so intense I had problems lying down, so I sat.. Every time I coughed or sneezed or laughed the pain was excruciating. I even slept sitting down at times," he added. He slowly got better and by the time the degeiko commenced at the beginning of June he was ready to go. He also  lost 10 kilos at some point and now weighs around 160. "It doesn't matter who I'm facing, I will do my best and if I  can concentrate day by day I think I will do well," he summed.

Isegahama judging chief on the Ozeki camp: "I hope they don't do sumo that shames the Ozeki rank. They should man up and do Ozeki sumo, " he said. All three Ozeki face tough opponents on day 1. "Truth be told, I'm not expecting anything from them.. It's been like this for a while now-I'd say a year. Ozeki is the rank closest to Yokozuna. I want them to properly do their own sumo and aim for Yokozuna. I'm pretty sure they want that as well, but the results don't show that.. I want them to rediscover their own sumo. As for Wakatakakage and his Ozeki promotion chances, he wasn't looking that great last basho. He has to get more stable results. As for Asanoyama, well, Sandanme is Sandanme. He should just seriously do his own sumo and I think he'll be fine.." said Isegahama Oyakata.

Couple of Nishikigi where there should be Nishikifuji?

Was just wondering the same as Nishikigi is not really a newbie to Makuuchi (more like the elevator guy...)

The best thing this slip up revealed is which YouTuber quotes all of Kintamayama’s translation ad verbatim.

Nice copyright trap. Onosho also doesn't face Nishikifuji or Nishikigi in the first 2 days.
