Is it just me, or does Ōtani look much older than he actually is?

Russell Crowe all the way.

Are we going to be forced to use the outdated Romanization scheme for some rikishi's real name just because some other sport that has a more famous person of the same name still does it for god knows what reason?

IIRC, Ohtani asked for the additional H in his name when he transfered.

I have wondered if he has mixed ethnicity:

I spent a bit looking for anyone else who was thinking this and didn't notice you mention it the first time around.  I thought of it specifically because of how much chest hair he has.  I'm not sure if I even had that much chest hair when I was that age. Given how clean the chests are of all the other pure Japanese and Mongolian rikishi, I'd say he has to have some ancestry elsewhere, even if it's just more Ainu than average.

Japan, despite what many would like to have you believe, isn’t ethnically homogenous.

My comment was meant to distinguish most Japanese rikishi, who in general have no chest hair, from those who have known ancestry from outside Japan and that have chest hair, like Takayasu.  I don't know of any rikishi (other than this new recruit) with significant chest hair that doesn't have known ancestry outside of Japan.  If you have a counterexample, I would be interested.

If you ask me, he looks like he has some European ancestry in him, maybe Russian or East European. Which is again probably the wrong end of Japan to look for Russians (cf Taihō).

So maezumo will consist of two lads bouncing against each other time and time again, and one of them is more than twice as heavy as the other. Neat.

Yes. I understood you were probably referring to Yamato Japanese and wasn't taking a shot at you - just attempting to point out that phrases like 'pure Japanese' are particularly inflammatory among the Ryukyuan people.

Unlike the Ainu they remain officially unacknowledged by the government.

I don't know Otani's family background but he is, as far as I know, from Okinawa - a place where native (non Yamato) Japanese have long been discriminated against.

The point I'm (obviously badly) making is that anyone casually speculating about the 'Japaneseness' of someone from Okinawa because of physical differences to Yamato people is venturing into a minefield.

Good news, the Isegahama kid looks to have some muscle in them arms

Bad news: His opponent is 110 kilos heavier then him and has the chanko belly.

Will be fun.

While he does have chest hair, and I'm no biological expert, mutations are a thing...

I never really noticed it before or at least didn't remember, but in his Wikipedia picture it's pretty obvious.  Shohozan's skin complexion has by itself suggested ancestry outside of Japan to me.  I had thought he was Filipino to some extent, but there's no indication of that anywhere that I can find other than someone asking about it on Facebook.  So I guess that's a counterexample.

Sendagawa / Toki was pretty hairy back in the day, even if we exclude the sideburns.

If Miyagino keeps scooping up former Hakuho Cup champs like Kawazoe and Mukainakano, the stable could also end up with Daiki Nakamura and Tetsuya Ochiai soon, the 2 amateur competitors showing the most pro potential I'd say (Ochiai also has the Tottori Johoku connection, having been teammates with Hokuseiho and Mukainakano). Could end up being a dream team heya if Hak can keep tapping into that talent pool.

Herouth tweeted this photo of Ochiai at Miyagino's asageiko.

Oh dang, hanging out at Miyagino, the Hakuho Cup connection, already having multiple high school buddies there, ditched the lifelong buzzcut........I'd say it all points toward one thing:

Ochiho (Clappingwildly...)

I recall this guy was another one:http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi.aspx?r=87  Oh, and he has a low rikishi number! 87!  Guess I am old, like the database!

If I'm correct, based on rikishi ID, the database was started in Natsu 1998. So 87 would have placed him in Ms20 or thereabouts, depending on exactly how large the salaried divisions were at the time.

I would guess Aki, I don't think he picks Kyushu

He was interviewed at the (Koto-)Sakura-zumo kids tournament in Tottori, at which Ochiai started his sumo life. He's continuing with keiko at the moment (as Tottori Johoku staff I guess) and wants to join ozumo this year.

I mean, i guess you're not too far off, but if there were 70 sekitori he'd be Ms9e.  This was before the expansion by 4 to 70 though, so he was Ms11e.
