Tamawashi yusho ... ?

No way. If he takes yusho, he will almost certainly be promoted to sanyaku. And he needs to stay maegashira to collect more kinboshi.

Overheard in Isegehama heya after Day 5:
“He got me,” Terunofuji said of Tamawashi's 4 kinboshi over him. "That f***ing Tamawashi boomed me."
The Yokozuna added, “He’s so good,” repeating it four times.
Terunofuji then said he wanted to add Tama to the list of players he works out with on the next tour.

Sources: Terunofuji is beside himself. Driving around downtown Tokyo begging (thru texts) Tamawashi's family for address to Tamawashi's house

Of the 3 remaining unbeaten rikishi, I agree Tamawashi is the most likely to yusho purely because he's done it before, but there's only a 3rd of the basho gone so it's way too early to call.
Terunofuji could still get a 13-2Y from here, so could Mitakeumi.

I'm just enjoying the show, which has produced some very entertaining highlights so far.
At the risk of sounding like a rikishi, I'm just taking the basho 1 day at a time.

Pretty much agreed, except the 4-1 batch are also quite in it. Takakeishō is always a contender if healthy, Hōshōryū came closest to beating Terunofuji last basho and might finally do it this basho with Terunofuji looking poorly, and Takayasu is also looking pretty good. Of the 5-0 batch I don't think Ōhō will remain a contender past the first week based on his past track record but he might always just surprise. If the current arasoi (bit early, but still) stay focused, we could be in for a very good series of elimination matches in week 2.

I also have to say, of those not already mentioned, Kiribayama is back in fine form this basho as well. Even if he doesn't make it anywhere higher than sekiwake he'll still be a pretty entertaining joi denizen for a while to come. He has tenacity and agility in the right proportions to get the crowd fired up.

We had an Oguruma beya do-beya bout in Makushita today between Tomokaze and Yago, which seemed to have gone unnoticed. "I really enjoyed that sumo..I would have said that even if I had lost.. I faced him hundreds of times in keiko so i was really happy to face him. I hope to do this again soon," said Tomokaze later. Both are ex-Makuuchi injury plagues rikishi trying to climb back to  sekitorihood.

Kaisei at his co-commentator debut on NHK today said he's a bit nervous, but he sounds relaxed and like he's really suited for this. Maybe he'll become a regular, today with Mainoumi.

Not a great day for the commentator debut, with Miyagino on Abema.

And later on he had left his seat as the NHK guy was asking him something - also here a funny Kaisei A and an unreliable Kaisei B

At least we still have 2 sanyaku one win behind the leaders, but that may be over soon and we get the same senkoku jidai/war period basho like the recent ones. Interesting times, with the predicted yusho winner changing each day.

Tamawashi will likely stay active till way past 40, to cash in the kinboshi he keeps collecting. 4 this year from Terunofuji mean an extra pay of 80 000 yen per month from now on (his one yusho only earns him an extra 60 000). His earlier 3 are from 3 other yokozuna, only missing Hakuho. He'll take a break if he's in sanyaku next basho, with proper makekoshi,  and hope that Terunofuji goes on for many more basho.

Maybe this is obvious,  but... a yusho means 60k yen each month? I thought it was just money when you won it.

And a zensho means 100 000 - so you can guess what it had cost the NSK that Hakuho went on for so long.

I hadn't thought of that!  It makes perfect sense from a personal finance point-of-view.  Of course, it shows a poor sense of hinkaku, but he's only been in Japan for 20 years, so he will learn.

Tamawashi climbs up another rung, now the 4th-oldest kinboshi winner.

Winner Basho, Day Yokozuna	Age of Winner

1) Oshio 1940 Haru, Day 6	Minanogawa	39 years, 5 months, 6 days
2) Kitanonada 1961 Natsu, Day 3	Asashio 38 years, 3 months, 8 days
3) Nayoroiwa 1952 Aki, Day 5 Chiyonoyama	37 years, 11 months, 29 days
4) Tamawashi 2022 Aki, Day 5 Terunofuji	37 years, 9 months, 30 days
5) Dewanishiki 1963 Haru, Day 4	Taiho 37 years, 7 months, 26 days
6) Aminishiki 2016 Hatsu, Day 3	Kakuryu 37 years, 3 months, 9 days

In other news:

I can't find/recall a thread on gyōji accidents so I'm just dumping it here, but Kimura Ginjirō had an unfortunate encounter with Hiradoumi's elbow today:

Strange, I'm almost sure I saw him win that way not so long ago. Probably I'm mistaken.

ENHO has tried it before.

In the last 2 years, Tamawashi is 53-29 from day 1 to day 7 and 29-53 from day 9 to day 15 (I included the 1 fusen in each direction just for the perfect symmetry). I can't think of him as a contender yet, let alone the frontrunner.

He's a new sekiwake so no way unless he wins the yusho. Even then I wouldn't be sure.

Am I missing something? He's 8-7, 8-7, 9-6 in the last three basho; he'd need two good basho in a row (including this one) to open the conversation. Even going 14 in this one leaves him at 31 only, which while not fatal, isn't exactly a strong 3-basho record either.

As much as I'd like him to reach the rank sooner rather than later, it's not likely within this basho, is it?
