End up in a higher position on the banzuke for a certain period? Very good chance But he's got to do much more to convince me his career will turn out better, if that's what you mean. Little brother has won a top division yusho, several sansho, and spent the last 12 tournaments ranked higher than 'Moto has ever been. He's also KK'd in his last 6 (all M3 or higher, 3 in sanyaku), whereas his brother just went 6-9 at a career high of M4. It's not even close right now, and I'm not sure how much better Wakamo will get considering he's about to turn 29. Bigger bro is strong and technically sound, but I think somewhat basic compared to WTK and less likely to put together the same run. Seiyashi 4,071 Posted September 14, 2022 Something up with Ōshōma's knee? He collapsed almost straight out of the tachiai and was visibly limping afterwards. Naruto seems to have the worst luck with injuries.
Katooshu 3,135 Posted September 14, 2022 Ya that didn't look right, just crumpled. So many Naruto guys struggle with injury - could it be something about their training?

What's ironic is that in a documentary about Naruto starting up his dohyo, he explicitly said he was going to employ secret training methods that would enable his deshi to do "injury-free sumo." Taliesin 68 Posted September 14, 2022 (edited) Yeah. And 20 years ago it was Asashoryu. Edit: And Asashoryu's was somewhat random. Ura's was very deliberate. Edited September 14, 2022 by Taliesin

Yokozuna Hattorizakura 151 Posted September 14, 2022 Oshouma looks like he just stepped wrong, had all his weight on the top of his toes. he should be ok Former heyamates Tomokaze and Yago fought each other today, was looking forward to it. When's the last time that happened? can't be that common.
RabidJohn 1,665 Posted September 14, 2022 It feels like a while since we had a henka from Chiyoshoma; it almost surprised me. I've seen Ura try moves like that before with limited success, but he's developed the upper body strength to really make it stick now. That tsutaezori was wonderful, and the first I've seen. I had issues with a couple of other kimarite calls, though. That was an uwatenage from Onosho; Myogiryu was already going down when he took his hand off the belt. I'd call it a 50% success rate with throws so far this basho for Onosho, which is quite remarkable. And Ichinojo had Daieisho on his way out with that arm pull (tottori? hikkake?) - the hand on the back was an afterthought. I wonder if Midorifuji is regretting turning his bout with Wakatakakage into a brawl? Looked to me like the blow that sent him down hurt his neck. Takakeisho was also in brawling mode today. Not pretty, but a necessary lesson for the up-and-coming Kotonowaka I suppose. Amazes me how Terunofuji gets away with it. When I see a significantly shorter aite get that deep morozashi grip, I think '"Step into my parlour," said the spider to the fly'.

Not sure it's a necessary lesson so much as an artifact of their bout in.... Ōsaka, if I remember correctly, where they were both pissed off after the bout. That was a lot of spirit from Takakeishō, but definitely in "did it cross the line or not" territory.

It was intense, but I don't think it even approached the line. All within the rules and spirit of fierce sumo. Takakeisho and Mitakeumi had a slapfest back in September 2018 which wasn't too far from today's bout: .

Like Goeido and his kubinage, while the utchari is an impressive throw it's a bit of a desperation move, indicating you've likely been on the losing end of the match up to the reversal. Not to say that Wakamotoharu is over-reliant on it at this point, but if I were to pick one over the other I'd stick with Wakatakakage's hazu-oshi style yorokiri.

dingo 1,160 Posted September 14, 2022 That look on Shodai's face after yesterday's and today's bout does not bode well. Can Hakuho be on guard duty every basho from now on? Tobizaru 2-2 after facing the Y/O crowd is very well done. Wonder what's in store for the rest of the basho.

Seregost 130 Posted September 14, 2022 Btw, what's up with Yutakayama? He looks sooo far away from that guy that defeated Mitakeumi when the latter won his first yusho in Nagoya 2018. He has been so disappointing since then :/
Sue 483 Posted September 14, 2022 Ura was totally going for a tasukizori, wasn't he, but his arm just wouldn't quite reach? The tsutaezori was just as cool, if not quite as rare.
