Midorifuji did lose against an ōzeki, while Tobizaru didn't beat one today either. Edited September 12, 2022 by Seiyashi

As of this basho, he will be older than Kyokutenho was when he yusho'd in 2012 so he might be out to prove something. I don't know though, at this stage of his career, Tamawashi seems content to kick a few big-name butts each time around and then settle back into his comfort zone. He's a funny case in that he's always been able to whip out yokozuna-level performances on any given day but has never been able to do so consistently. RabidJohn 1,665 Posted September 13, 2022 Superb utchari from Wakamotoharu. Did Ura just invent a look-no-hands! kimarite today? Great win over Shodai by the diminutive Midorifuji, and I loved the exchange of smiles between him and Terunofuji in the hanamichi. Tobizaru sat on the audience far longer than usual, clearly dazed from the clash of heads with Takakeisho at the tachi-ai. What a come-down from yesterday. Mitakeumi looked really annoyed with himself for losing to Meisei.
Gospodin 187 Posted September 13, 2022 That head butt spectacularly stopped Tobizaru in his tracks. As for Ura, somebody might send him a bull´s ear as acknowledgement for that move.
Seregost 130 Posted September 13, 2022 Well, maybe it's too soon, and he was lucky anyway with his promotion... but Hiradoumi is 3-0 and fighting strong
Gurowake 3,923 Posted September 13, 2022 So unless they redid most of the lower division torikumi last night, I was wrong with my analysis of the Tomokaze situation. He's facing Yago on Day 4, and they both have only one match so far. Yago does have a win and Tomokaze doesn't, so they apparently didn't care about that, which means it's even less likely they redid everything to fit that match in, and I simply didn't notice Yago not having an obvious opponent. This is the approach that makes the most sense to me, so while I'm annoyed at being so obviously wrong, I'm glad they fixed it in a logical manner. 2
rhyen 1,809 Posted September 13, 2022 I presume that everyone is watching the abema stream. the NHK stream is going to have Kitanofuji do a livestream Q&A session on day 7 (with Shikoroyama oyakata). All questions are being sourced from twitter. Looks like they are really experimenting on the Day 7, like Miyagino previous session.
Kintamayama 44,354 Posted September 13, 2022 (edited) I'm not sure if this has any real bearing, but it's true. The guys that had the most changes in weight are doing well, and not so well.. Hokutofuji dropped 5 kilos? He's 3-0. Tochinoshin added 11 kilos? He's 2-1 and looking quite genki. Meisei added 5 kilos? 2-1 in the meat grinder. Chiyoshouma lost 6 kilos? 2-1. Hiradoumi and Wakamotoharu dropped 4 kilos? Both are 3-0. The flip side- Takarafuji dropped 4 kilos? 0-3. Aoiyama added 4 kilos? 0-3. Total nonsense probably, but maybe there is something there. I'll get back to this at the end of the basho and see if it proves something, and then I'll try to figure out what exactly it proves. Reonito 1,335 Posted September 13, 2022 Two observations from the lower divisions: I think I spotted the elusive double henka in the Fujitoshi vs. Ryuo bout in Makushita. That seemed like a pretty blatant if brief hair pull by Tohakuryu on his winning move against Atamifuji.

Yes, even in Makuuchi, though most happened quite a while ago (and that's just in the first 3 days). Edited September 14, 2022 by Reonito
