Congratulations to Shodai for achieving kadoban status again. I love this guy's consistency.

So at the end of day 9 the best record in sanyaku is 6-3. Can any of our Database Yokozuna find out how rare this is?

At least we still have 2 sanyaku one win behind the leaders, but that may be over soon

Now we have 2 two wins behind, but I guess that won't be over anytime this basho. Nobody thinks Hokutofuji will go on like that, IIRC the discussion here.

That was dangerously close, Takakeisho is the last sanyaku hope

Gone - I didn't expect the sanyaku to be that bad again - or rather underestimated Hokutofuji

Shodai is only the third Ozeki to have 1 win by day 9 and the previous two don't count as they were in 1909 and 1915 when the basho was only 10 days. Also, they included kyujo. Shodai is therefore the first ever Ozeki to makekoshi on day 9.

Oh-no-zeki - and Terunofuji has been given up also by the fans in the hall - the Morinaga-sho that they chose used to be fix on Terunofuji on the past, this basho it also was on ozeki some  days, but today it was on Hokutofuji, though Terunofuji-Takayasu usually should have the full fan attention

Well, that was fun, but also pretty dire sumo. Looked like a veteran's bout at jungyo.

All the Ozeki and the Yokozuna losing is no longer a noteworthy event.

Komusubi and Sekiwake are expected to lose. That's sort of what they're their for: to be fodder for the Ozeki and Yokozuna corp. Such is the current quality though ...

So, what will Terunofuji do now. Pulling out is very justified, but he has shown multiple times in the past that if there's any choice he usually elects to persevere.

To lose to those above and be the point of attention if those fail

He has to withdraw. He's nowhere near the yusho race and passes the eye test for injury. Nobody will complain if he gives his body a rest.

The only thing consistent this basho is a shukun interview every day - which means, there was no day where all y/o won

I know he "has to", but I won't be surprised if he doesn't (at least for now).

Updated query of futility.

From this I conclude that the current basho sets new records:

  • Top 5 after Day 9 exclusively Maegashira
  • All sanyaku trailing by at least 3 after Day 9

He has no kinboshi to give out anymore (except if they pair him with Hokutofuji) and he stayed till the end before, so I guess he'll go on

Why would Terunofuji pull out? He isn't look worse than the rest of sanyaku and there's a ton of envelopes up for grab in each of his matches.

Terunofuji notwithstanding, will Shodai give Takarafuji a sorely needed win or will he pull out first?

There's lots of envelopes to win in future basho too. If he's injured, he'll prolong his career better by resting. Besides, he needs to win get those envelopes and he's not looking very spritely.
