Any news on why Tobizaru was rubbing his eyes so much after his bout with Meisei? Doesn't seem like the opponent to warrant an emotional response to winning, did he cop a stray finger in the eye?

I've been very impressed with him. I expected him to crash and burn as I felt he was way out of his depth at M1. 4-3 after the tough first week, very impressive.

People on the net suggested that a contact lens went out of place during the brawl. I've never seen Tobizaru wearing glasses though.

Just before today's match there was a quick poll to predict the winner. Shodai got the majority all right, but it was something like 58-42%. And when he lost I was like "Oh that's nice for Nishikigi".

When an ozeki fights an M4 who is the wrong side of  30 and has spent most of the last couple of years in juryo the poll should have been 95-5 and my reaction should have been "Wow that's incredible!".

The cartoonist certainly nailed it as far as the look on Shodai's face and his little raisin-like eyes.  Can you please tell me what's being said and what the black balls are?  Thanks!

I believe Shōdai is telling everyone it's not embarassing to lose. Should have been either yesterday or the day before where all of them lost.

My two cents is, same reason as he couldn't handle Tobizaru - a bit too much chaos and then being too impatient to finish the match. Hōshōryū does really well against known elements with a standard belt plan, but isn't quite as strong against oshi types by default. Not enough preparation, I'd say.

Watch the bout. Midorifuji is always two steps ahead, and every move by Hoshoryu is immediately countered. Smart sumo.

Hosh likes to think and set up his techniques. The ones who are fast-paced and go right at him give him less time to do that. Tobi and Midori are rikishi in that mold, and also have good balance to help them execute that approach without toppling.

This is about the point where he flips a switch and runs the tables- en route to an 8-7 basho--just as we're all beginning to write his obituary.

Because while Hoshoryu is awesome, Midorifuji is no fluke either. He's really good.

Horses for courses. It seems that just about every rikishi (except Hakuho of course) has a nemesis they just match up poorly with, who becomes a constant thorn in their mawashi.

I left a suggestion for Sumo Prime Time to do a series on rikishi head-to-heads, but not only the obvious ones like Yokozuna v Yokozuna, also less obvious ones like an inexplicable nemesis where one otherwise talented rikishi just can’t handle a certain guy in particular. I can’t think of an example off the top of my head but I know I’ve seen some over the years.

Well, you expect everyone to lose to Hakuho. I'm thinking of pairings where a recognized talent has an unexpected losing record to one who is seen as pretty mediocre or at least not as good, or a pairing which is surprisingly balanced. Kakuryu-Myogiryu is kind of an example of the latter. Only 11-10 in the Yokozuna's favour. All but two of those bouts had Kakuryu as an Ozeki or Yokozuna. Myogiryu beat Kakuryu four times in a row while Kak was an Ozeki, and of the 9 bouts they had while Kak was a Yokozuna, Myo won 4! Mind you, Kakuryu has a few other cases like this including Tochiozan (24-21 to Kak) and Aminishiki (17-15 to Kak,), although most losses were when Kak was a Maegashira so these are less interesting examples. Tomokaze has a perfect record against Kakuryu ... both kinboshi! (Yeah, two wins, not really enough data points there ... haha).

Ok, I just checked sumodb. Actually Hosh is 4-0 vs Abi and 5-0 vs Hokutofuji, so he can handle fast/oshi guys alright. Midori on the other hand is so-so vs other guys and dominant vs Hosh *only*. So maybe this is explained by that mismatch/horse/kryptonite thing.

I think Hosh is a technical rikishi, as is Midori. Somehow their different tech styles kills Hosh's. He needs to be smarter.

(Yeah I categorize rikishi as tech/speed/power types, following some unrelated videogames .)
