Nishonoseki going shopping with Adachi, with at least one trolley chockful of meat for their 18 wrestlers. I doubt this is all for a week - feels like it'd be gone in less than two days. He's even using the term for "binge shopping/shopping spree" (lit. explosive buying) rather than the usual terms for shopping. (Couldn't they set up a local delivery from the supermarket?)

Most likely because there were groceries on offer that you have to buy in person to get discounts?

The press is wondering aloud why the okamisan did not appear in any of the pictures during the official opening of the heya. She was there and was in some pictures taken, but the Oyakata specifically asked for her not to appear in any official photos. The press finds that strange. When Kitanoumi became Oyakata and rijicho way back then, his wife was never seen in photos for 37 years as she supported her husband. The question is what will happen when an Ozeki will be born out of Nishonoseki, since she has to appear in public next to her husband during the ceremony..In Kitanoumi's case, the okamisan had declared she would be by his side when that happens, but alas, it never did.

In some ways I'm glad it's Nishonoseki pushing back against all the stuff that's taken for granted in the kakkai - like no breakfast before keiko, shielding his okamisan from the public eye, and having a non-traditional location + layout for his heya. If it had been Magaki who had tried it he would have been excoriated for it, but hopefully Nishonoseki can make it work and provoke some food for thought amongst his peers, who'll be the next generation of heya owners.

I mean, when it comes to excuses for keeping things the way they were, there's keeping cultural traditions alive, and then there is doing things for the sake of doing.

Nishonoseki-beya's sponsors, the AI Komuten company, has again provided them with their lodgings for Nagoya, which are apparently 1.5x the size of the one in Kyūshū (Probably a necessity, seeing as how the heya has grown since then due to absorbing part of Oguruma stable).

On a side note, seeing as there's non-traditional nobori, I wonder if that means that the one nobori company in Gifu has more business from sumo sponsors who wish to commission their own nobori, or whether they're just sort of mass screen printed on fabric or something.

The lodgings for Nagoya are in Anjo city, not close to a train station, at least 1 hour to the basho location, the Dolphins arena.

Well, I guess that's the flipside to the great facility - it needs to be out somewhere where the cost of land is cheaper. I hope there's at least some form of conveyance to the nearest train station, which looks at least 1km off.

Today's update is a twofer:

First, the TV program Junk Sports gifted a clock to Nishonoseki-beya for the keikoba.

Second, and more interestingly:

Nishonoseki streamed their keiko online for (I think) members, which seems a bit of a refinement on Naruto's previous streaming in that it's only open to members. Some Q&A was tossed in as well.

Nishonoseki-beya is now in residence at their temporary lodgings in Aichi.

They've also got two dohyō there, which makes them one of the heya with that rare privilege (Naruto also has a double dohyō lodging for Nagoya).

Nishonoseki was also a guest on a NHK special programme talking about sotogake, together with Kitanofuji, Takekuma (ex-Gōeidō), Ajigawa (ex-Aminishiki), Sadanoumi, and Hōshōryū.

As it was Nishonoseki's birthday on 3rd July, his deshi organised a small party and a new practice mawashi. (Looks like they, not the gyoji, wrote that; the lettering is a bit crude to be true sumōji. Either that, or their gyoji needs more practice, or is unused to writing on fabric - ink "bleeds" a lot more on that material relative to e.g. paper or wood.)

Lastly, a seminar from DNS(? Department of Nutritional Services? Sounds too American) on food and nutrition for the rikishi.

Ichiyamamoto and Shimaazumi, who were Nishonoseki's tsukebito when he was a yokozuna, went to Nishonoseki for degeiko. Build it and they will come, eh?
