Damn. From a career-high to almost certainly out of Makuuchi for Ishiura in just 3 basho. Crazy.

Kotonwaka might have beast-moded him right out of his career.

Speaking of which, do we know if he's considered out for the basho or just at the start?

I wouldn't be surprised to see him return later in the basho to reduce the rank loss. However, he is dealing with a spinal injury so if he wants a proper recovery of any sort, he'd better stay out.

When Asanoyama reappears at the Nagoya basho, does anyone know what his rank will be?  Will it be Ms42w?  A sumo friend of mine in Japan thought he would have to start in Sandanme.

He's still losing rank for each basho missed. Sandanme is correct.

Only 4 of the 10 Minato rikishi (including Ichinojo) are annouced as kyujo. Weird.

It must be a new covid variant. Contagious for some, not for others.

Or maybe it's just the fact that test results these days are much quicker and there is no need any more to sit out guys who tested negative for no real reason.

Are the three kyujo rikishi Ichinojo's tsukebito, perhaps? It seems odd given it was the last week before the basho, but possibly the rest of the Minato crew had no direct contact to Ichinojo in a while? Of course there was the report of an unnamed lower division rikishi testing positive there as well, so maybe that theory doesn't make much sense either way.

On another note, I could be misreading things but it seems to me that there's no possible opponent left for Sd90e Hokutoyakumo, so he may have been accidentally omitted from the kyujo list by the Kyokai.

  Sd89e
Fukuazuma
0-0

0-0
Sd89w
Aratakayama
0-0

  Jd1e
Genbumaru
0-0

0-0
Sd90w
Baraki
0-0

Well, wouldn't that leave Sd90td Kayo up for day2 ? Or am I missing something ?

Also why wasn't it Sd90e Hokutoyakumo vs Sd90w Baraki and Sd90td Kayo vs Jd1e Genbumaru ? There is no intra-beya intricacies around there ...

Judging from the history it'll be Sd22.  Just high enough that a 7-0 should land him in the top 15 Makushita ranks, so he'll likely only need 2 basho before returning as sekitori if he's perfect.  However, note that the most recent 7-0 from that area of Sandanme was not in the top 15 ranks of Makushita, and it also happened another time in the past, so it depends on banzuke luck and isn't a forced thing like certain division promotions.  (Certain conspiracy-minded people might think the most recent occurrence was done to justify what they expected to do a few basho later to Asanoyama.  He got roughly 2-3 ranks of banzuke luck while still a sekitori, making Sd25 probably the lowest possible place he'd end up, so it would be reasonable to expect he'd be in that area.)

Thought Tochinoshin would rest a couple of days after that fall, but it seems he will go on. Sad for Chiyooga, he just reached a career high and is young too.

A bit late but there was one change ahead of Day 5, Ms37e Omoto began his basho, having been absent at the start. He fights former Maegashira Fujiazuma on Day 6.

And as mentioned elsewhere, sanyaku gyoji Kimura Tamajiro withdrew on Day 4 due to a herniated disc in his lower back.
