Would it be Jan 1972 the last time when leaders had 7 wins after 9 days?

Checked and not the case. As recent as Sept 2020 6 way tie after 9 days with 7 wins.

I am rooting for Chiyosakae down in makushita. Soon to be 32 years old, 13 years in sumo, and 4-1 at a career high rank of Ms3e. I hope his perseverance pays off and sekitorihood is in his future!

Didn't the shinpan crew change (at least partially) this basho? I remember people talking about Nishonoseki and Naruto becoming shinpan.

Yep, and they've been around, forgive the dodgy screen grabs from highlight compilations:

Naruto (Day 3):

Nishonoseki (Day 8):

They've clearly practiced their "stern, slightly disapproving" look for shimpan duties.

My favorite is Oshima/Kyokutenho; he often seems to have a wry smile as if saying to himself "what the hell was that?"

Links to  archived Makuuchi Day 7 videos , photos, match articles, selected Rikishi quotes, match results, Kimarite and time statistics with comparisons to the March Basho. I have added match results and Kimarite statistics for Juryo. Also Top Rank performance, Maegashira v san'yaku, and Top Ten performance in Juryo.

Have added Time of Match statistics for Juryo (no official source, so I used a stop watch app). Probably not exact, but close. Anyway, if anyone knows of an "official" source available in English please let me know. Hope it increases your enjoyment of the Basho.

Enjoy

Wow, that was a hell of a matta-fest between Akua and Kaishō. Almost better than the bout itself.

Flashbacks to last basho's playoff for Takayasu as he snatches defeat from the jaws of victory with his aite sidestepping him on the bales.

Two sekitori seem to have done a switcheroo.

Tamawashi now has a week 2 fade "comparable" to Mitakeumi. His record in the past 5 basho was as follows:

  • 2021 Aki: 3-5, then 3-4, including one fusen win.
  • 2021 Kyushu: 6-2, then 3-4, including 4 straight losses to end the basho.
  • 2022 Hatsu: 6-2, then 2-5.
  • 2022 Haru: 4-4, then 3-4.
  • 2022 Natsu: 6-2, then now 2 straight losses in the second week all but ending his hopes of a second yushō unless something else goes really wrong.

Mitakeumi's sumo, on the other hand, now feels vaguely reminiscent of Terunofuji's(!). Traditionally an oshi specialist, Mitakeumi is going more and more for a yotsu grip that looks like a half kime hold, and he seems content to have lengthy lockups and to bodily manhandle his foe by their arms, as shown against Tobizaru today.

Perhaps the most valiant effort from Hōshōryū against Terunofuji so far, but his duck remains alive and quacking.

Shodai drops to 3-7 and within one of kadoban. Takaeisho loses to go to 5-5; Mitakeumi goes up to 5-5 with a win.  The last time we had three Ozeki with 5+ losses by day 10 was July 1971 as far as I can tell.

http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Query_bout.aspx?show_form=0&group_by=basho&day=10&rank1=O&wins1=0-5

Wakatakakage keeps his Ozeki run alive by beating Shodai, though he will need to be perfect until Sunday to hit 10 wins.

Day 10 in the books, and is Takanosho the frontrunner?

Teru's just one off, but he seems so weak against aggressive thrusters this basho, and he still has a few to go.

This basho is weird!

Shared with the great Ichiyamamoto himself.

A rare instance of hyper-yaocho. The entire division is in on the fix, save Shodai. They paid off a few to lose almost all, and rest is trading wins as they see fit. :-D

I've been fading week 2 Tamawashi longer than that. His previous year was even worse.

Or to put a positive spin on it, he's pretty great in week 1!

Have you considered that Shodai may be the one actually raking in the pay-off money?

No ozeki with a winning record and all in danger of getting the kadoban status... crazy. Terunofuji and Takanosho look to be the main yusho contenders to me but with how things went so far, who knows ?

Lot of monoii today. I like it that way, better to double check if there is some doubt and avoid more mistakes

First time for new shimpan Nishonoseki to give a mono-ii conference explanation as head shimpan on his jonidan shift in the Miyabishin-Kototora bout, with one slight hesitation confirming the gyoji call

Today was stagger on your way back up onto the dohyo day, with Tsurugisho and Takakeisho leading the way by example.

Meanwhile, Tokushoryu in sole possession of the lead in Juryo after day 10. I am so 100% down for a Tokushoryu yusho to stand alongside his unexpected Makuuchi triumph a while back and I know I’m not alone in this.

Tokushoryu had a Yusho from J11e in Aki 2018, losing only to Hakuyozan, Enho, Wakatakakage and Daiamami.

I'll second this, it was getting outrageous how inconsistent the calls were. Much rather that they check even if most of the ones they felt necessary to check today were really straightforward in the end.

Had to laugh out loud at okinoumi's effort (or lack thereof) today, it was almost unbelievable how he seemed to be saying "hurry up and push me so I can step out backwards".

Looking forward with interest at which bouts are skipped in coming days to help resolve an unclear yusho race... or I suppose they could let ichiyamamoto take it having only faced low maegashira

I'm about 2/3 of the way through the day's matches (so I may be repeating someone, I'm not reading new posts because spoilers) and man, does it ever look like the judges got yelled at by somebody. They're jumping on matches that aren't nearly as close as some of the ones they've been letting go.

Terunofuji looking decidedly shaky this basho and yet still doing miles better than any of the ōzeki.
