Sumo Spiffy 535 Posted May 6, 2022 I'd like to see Teru get through a whole basho again. But if he agrees with Hakuho's idea of not wanting to leave the sport without another yokozuna in place, I wonder if we're going to see a lot of dropouts from him.

since_94 650 Posted May 8, 2022 Quite a healthy number of "shin deshi" or new sumo apprentices introduced today. Must have been around 35 or 36 youngsters out there.

jsolo 106 Posted May 8, 2022 MAY 2022 (NATSU) BASHO LINKS AND STATISTICS BLOG--INTRODUCTION AND PREVIEWS Links to various resources, several previews (print, and audio and video podcasts), information about the Rikishi, and a comparison between the latest JSA Rikishi weights and those for January (the latest I have copied out). Will be doing daily posts as always, using many sources (of which this board is one of the most important), followed by a summary and video index at the end. mikawa 1,794 Posted May 8, 2022 (edited) Huge gasps when Terutsuyoshi grabbed a huge handful of salt and loud claps when he threw them into the ring (and even louder claps when he won) Edited May 8, 2022 by mikawa

Benihana 1,901 Posted May 8, 2022 Uh-oh, Takakeisho and Shodai looking weak. Mitakeumi on the other hand looking strong, taking down 2 in a single bout. 1

Hankegami 412 Posted May 8, 2022 (edited) Good first day. Some quick considerations about my favorites. Meisei surprised me positively. I was left with news of his poor performance in keiko, so I was totally unprepared for a match like this. Granted, he is fighting in the low ranks right now but is still impressive. Tochinoshin looked... Tochinoshin. We all know his knee went intai long ago and today he reminded us of it once again. I am under the impression he will have his usual struggle to get a KK. No triumphal marches up the banzuke, but that's much of expected from him. Kudos for the Wakabros. Wakamotoharu and Wakatakakage already in their element today. The Shakira Era dream lives another day. Abi and Takakeisho both unimpressive at the tachi-ai and for their san'yaku rank in general. This is worrisome especially for Takakeisho "Tachi-ai" Mitsunobu. What's the point of being too fat for your own good if you fail to push your opponent back? Nice win for Kotonowaka, by the way, his future looks good. Shodai lost but I personally wasn't displeased of him. He fought his fight, just like Takayasu. I think he will have a better first week than in Haru (not a hard task, anyway). Finally, Hoshoryu and Terunofuji. The Nephew keeps looking as solid as play-doh, someone always manages to play him around. This is a true shame given his high-quality technique. But I am most worried for Terunofuji. He failed his tachi-ai big time, even worse than Takakeisho who at least stood his ground. Granted, Daieisho is a nasty opponent for him, but in the good 'ole times he always had to work hard for his win. This time he had quite an easy go. And for tomorrow, Mitakeumi vs. Hoshoryu, and Terunofuji vs. Takayasu. With Mita & Papa having fought their hardest today, I can tell they are in a very good shape. I have a bad feeling that the two worrisome guys from above will get a 0-2 tomorrow. Seriously, Terunofuji should sit out if he's not in a good form. I cannot see the point in throwing out his matches almost for free. Don't get me wrong, I adore him and absolutely loved his dominance throughout 2021. That's particularly heartbreaking seeing him struggling like this for... What again? Edited May 8, 2022 by Hankegami

Shakira Era? Que? --- He's never going to shake things up in the highest ranks, but Kotoeko remains one of my favourite rikishi purely for his entertainment value. He puts on a better show than many higher ranked guys. I have to agree that Takakeisho and Terunofuji losing the way they did today did not look good for rikishi of their ranks. Basically, we got a Waka-Taka era in the 1990s with brothers Wakanohana (III) and Takanohana (II). Me and others suggested we are perhaps now witnessing a Waka-Waka era with Wakamotoharu and Wakatakakage.
