Banzuke for Natsu 2022

Ishiura getting demoted half a rank more than Meisei with a record one win better. :-S No way that's just a joi bonus for Meisei. Ishiura might as well not have bothered coming back to the basho if that's how they were going to treat his time missed.

In a related note (because that's what Ishiura's demotion resulted in), I wonder how the heck Yutakayama got away as the only non-demoted 7-8 rikishi here, given the contortions they had to go through to give everybody else one.

Did the banzuke committee membership change? All the decisions seem to be the polar opposite of what they did under similar circumstances in March.

Chiyotairyu went 12w -> 13e, no?

Phew, quite a few interesting shikona changes on this banzuke. A quartet of Oguruma-beya survivors receive a new shikona in their new home at Nishonoseki-beya. Sakaekaze is now Wakenosato, honouring his hometown and district in Okayama prefecture. He changes the first kanji of the given name to match his actual given name, no change to the reading. Next, Fujikawa mixes his family and given names to become Fujiibuki, with the new shikona given name of Yoshito - the first kanji of that is the same as in Yoshikaze. The origins of the other two changes are not obvious - Tatsukaze is now Ryuo, and Abe is now Aron.

One-time former Juryo Fukushima lost his shikona of Gokushindo in late 2020, perhaps as an in-house penalty for his part in breaking COVID protocols with Abi, but he gets it back now.

In Musashigawa-beya, Yanagida gets his first shikona, Yokomaru and a new given name, Haruaki.

I mentioned recently that Dewanoumi-beya's Yamato would get his first shikona as his younger brother joins the heya this basho, but it's not the obvious reading that I suggested - instead it's Suio.

From Tokitsukaze-beya, Toyoshimizu's shikona was already a partial tribute to his home city, but now it's total - Tosashimizu. He also changes the given name to Manjiro; I'm only guessing, but to me it seems like that's taken from Nakahama Manjiro, who was born in what is now Tosashimizu. Meanwhile, Wakayutaka's new shikona of Setoyutaka is taken from the Seto Inland Sea, on the coast of which is situated his home city of Kurashiki.

Over in Takekuma-beya, the heya provides a kanji for Tatsuguchi's new shikona, Kumanoryu.

Michinoku-beya's Ryuki is now Yusui, honouring his hometown of the same name. He takes the old shikona as the given name (it's also his actual given name).

Over in Naruto-beya, recently-injured Hagiwara gets his first shikona, Hokuozan, honouring his home prefecture Hokkaido and with the 'Europe' kanji from the shisho (former Ozeki Kotooshu) in the middle. He also changes the given name to Kokichi.

Last but not least, Wakafujioka gets his first shikona of Wakaarata. That's a break with Nishiiwa-beya's usual policy of granting shikona upon promotion to Sandanme, but as he's from Higashi-Osaka I reckon it's another oyakata paying tribute to the late Aratakayama.

Only the second shikona I recall seeing whose provided reading uses ー for vowel elongation; the other was current sewanin Ranbo (Kyokai profile).

Nakahama Manjiro is one of those historical characters that should be the topic of an NHK taiga drama, though no one would believe the real story.

Hagiwara shares a family name with Nishonoseki Oyakata; a change of shokona would make things less weird. Interestingly, ex-Kisenosato is not listed on the English Wiki page featuring "notable people" with that last name, but the former lead singer of the Tempters is, along with the man recognized for inventing the fortune cookie.

And with the large number of new shikona this basho, my condolences to @Asojima for the extra work.

The new team after the kyokai elections started to work in April, Sadogatake new (joint) top, Kumegawa new among the deputies. The plain shimpan who take part in the conference also changed with the new members. Oyakata of iin class take part and all other members of the shimpan department are iin, so Nishonoseki and Naruto are new in there as well.

Nothing new on the makuuchi banzuke, so none of the usual pics with banzuke - likely the usual one of Mitakeumi tomorrow, and one of the only new juryo Tochimaru. Today it's only the online press conference of Wakatakakage.

A short addition to the regular shikona abbreviation discussion. Today I saw the yokozuna called simply Teru (1 kanji) in the headline of an article - he is so absolutely established now that this is enough. I don't remember any other rikishi with more than 1 kanji in the shikona being referred to with just 1. 2 is the usual form of abbreviation, like with Kise.

43 heyas, 638 rikishi in total. So, Kokonoe beya continue to lead the league with 28 players. Tamanoi,, Sadogatake and Hakkaku with 25, followed by Takasago with 24. Kise with 22, Takadagawa with 21, Sakaigawa with 20, Shikihide, Oitekaze and Isegahama round up the top ten. Nishonoseki has grown since January : 4-13-16.

Least- Nishikido (3), Takekuma, Oshiogawa (two of the newest heya) and Kataonami with 4.

Sekitori? Oitekaze have 3 in Makuuchi and 4 in Juryo. Isegahama (4,2) , Kokonoe and Kise both have 2 and 3, 12 heya have no Sekitori at all.

Hometown: Tokyo (50), Osaka (35), Aichi (33), Hyogo (31), Chiba (30), Saitama and Kanagawa (29), Fukuoka (26), Kumamoto and Kagoshima (23), Hokkaido (20). Least- Tottori and Shiga with 1 each.

One thing that surprised the hell out of me (though maybe this is well-known) when I looked up who the most likely demotions from makuuchi would be was that someone from M13 with five wins was more likely to drop to juryo than someone at M17 with 7 wins. And that's exactly what happened. I feel bad for Chiyonokuni, coming back with that shoulder injury to try to save his spot in the division only to lose it anyway, especially given that he was doing really well before he had to drop out. I thought they might show him a little more love given that he was clearly in position to not just stay in makuuchi, but also get a KK given how he started.

I was surprised by how far he fell, but maybe that means it actually mattered that he found the second win. Do you think he would have been sent to juryo instead of one of the Super Chiyo Bros if he'd only had one?

The Banzuke committee must really love Kagayaki. It is not first time they are soft on him, so I wouldn't expect a M17 with 7 wins to be treated like that every time.

Believe it or not, it's more common for an M17 with 7 wins to stay in makuuchi than drop to juryo.

Weirdly, it happened several times in the '50s, then never again until 2004. They were never dropped to juryo in the '50s, and have stayed in makuuchi four times out of seven since 2004.

Remember that if you look up a M17 with 7 wins, that guarantees that the banzuke extends to at least M17. M13 with 5 wins might be in a basho where the lowest rank is M15 or M16. There are a lot of basho without M17

As maglor referenced, this trend isn't actually strange when you look at how far down the division extended at that particular point in time. My working theory for why we saw midorifuji and kagayaki instead of chiyonokuni and chiyomaru actually involves the separation of ishiura and meisei on the banzuke - I think that for whatever reason, the committee decided to punish rikishi for not sticking around to fight all 15 days (even when chronically injured).
