Kintamayama 44,639 Posted April 21, 2022 (edited) Ajigawa Oyakata (ex-Aminishiki) tells us of Terunofuji's situation:' "He has restarted doing serious keiko lately and has been training with the heya's sekitori. The number of bouts he does daily depends on how he feels on that day. He has even had long butsugari sessions on some days and is going about it while listening to his body, " he explained. Terunofuji has been having all sorts of trouble this year. Heel injury in January, then caught the virus after that basho, and was unable to prepare properly for March. Then, his old right knee injury flared up causing him to leave the basho on day 6. The usually non-complaining Yokozuna himself asked to go kyujo, which is rare for him and that means his body must have reached some sort of limit. "Looking at him, it really seemed like he was in pain. He started the recovery process slowly but Shirley, and now he seems to have overcome the injuries and has been piling up those training sessions. Because he was not involved in the yusho race, he will be facing the next basho with strong determination. If his condition will be perfect he will most certainly be in contention for the yusho," said Ajigawa. The power structure on the dohyo has changed a bit in the last two bashos, with Mitakeumi promoted to Ozeki and Wakatakakage getting his first yusho and becoming the definite candidate to become the next Ozeki. Add Abi, Kotonowaka and Houshouryuu to the mix, and something is cooking and boiling and aiming to overflow. "The new guys, the current faces in joi, have changed. If he can face them by properly doing his own sumo, I think it could lead to his yusho" he added. It would be interesting to see how he does during the first half where he will meet relatively lesser opponents -this could be the key factor in his quest for the yusho. "I want him to properly prepare himself and gambarize!" summed ex-Aminsihiki, who finally gets his retirement ceremony on May 29th. He retired back in July 2019.. "Truth be told, I'm nervous and will prepare for it seriously... I want the people who will come to enjoy themselves. i will of course respect the formalities, but will try to paint it with my colors.." he summed, regarding his danpatsushiki. hakutorizakura 608 Posted April 21, 2022 Good for Aminishiki. More delay and he'd have even less hair to cut

Also agree about the vanishing hairline. The koenkai may have to line up to get a cut at the wig!

Indeed. Daieisho, Takayasu, Hokutofuji, Endo and Tamawashi won't be pushovers for an ailing Yokozuna. Even Ichinojo, Kiribayama or Kotonowaka might stir trouble.

Don't call me Shirley! (On most other forums this would cause a change of username or shikona)

Kintamayama 44,639 Posted May 3, 2022 (edited) Mitakeumi spoke to the press today. "I goes without saying that 10 wins are the minimum for me. I must properly fill my obligation as an Ozeki.. I have to make it my business to make things exciting till the last day," he said. He has had at least 11 wins in the last three bashos. "It's all in the mind. Especially last basho-becoming an Ozeki has taken a load off me and I was able to do good sumo," he added. He revealed that the reason for his absence from the Kyokai joint keiko was that someone affiliated with his heya caught the Corona virus, so he stayed away. "It's a pity because I really wanted to feel the other sekitori's weight. The sensation is a bit blunt but I wish to slowly get my sharpness back," he added further. He is close to his mother and was on a variety show with her lately. "It's the first and last time.. Please leave my ma alone.." he jested. He brings her presents on Mother's Day- handkerchief, flowers, etc. This time, it falls on Day 1. "I hope to bring her a win as a present.." he summed. (I can hear the "ohhhhhh..." all the way to here..) Edited May 3, 2022 by Kintamayama 6
Benevolance 2,482 Posted May 4, 2022 Wait, wait, wait. "It goes without saying that 10 wins minimum obligation for an ozeki?" No, no. Someone better let him know it's eight wins and coast, or he's going to screw up this whole system. 2 1
