WAKATAKE 2,631 Posted July 24, 2022 Hoshoryu had some pretty good matches in my opinion, but obviously the sansho committee felt otherwise
WAKATAKE 2,631 Posted July 24, 2022 Hokutofuji confirmed to be positive for Covid. Okinoumi also pulled from the matches. Broadcast confirming that Nishikifuji gets the kanto-sho

Akinomaki 39,790 Posted July 24, 2022 No man-in onrei banners this basho, today should be full enough though

Just that the Takarafuji and Nishikifuji were slated to fight confirmed infected rikishi, (and given their yotsu sumo style) would have likely been infected like what Mitakeumi did to Terunofuji at the danpatsushiki cluster. rhyen 1,809 Posted July 24, 2022 No representative for Hitoshi at the victory presentation.
sumoforever 27 Posted July 24, 2022 Looking back at Asanoyama's fighting record, I'd forgotten he'd been Ozeki for such a short time. Just 6 basho - only 4 basho completed (all double digit KK), with two withdrawals (including the basho from which he withdrew before suspension). Thought it'd been longer than just one year! Also noted this sandamne 22W ranking is his third lowest ever banzuke position, after his 2016 sandamne tsukedashi. Unless he gets injured, I imagine he should be back in makuuchi pretty soon. Thorbjarn 214 Posted July 24, 2022 It's the first time this Basho I've been watching live. The audible reaction towards Okinoumi's kyujo announcement caught me off guard... Was this the norm? Yutakayama really destroyed Tochinoshin, which was quite the surprise to me given the lopsided head to head.
Kaninoyama 1,694 Posted July 24, 2022 That was borderline choking assault by Aoiyama. Not sorry to see him lose that one.

I mean the win was excellent, yes, but the win removed any possibility in there being a 3 man playoff. I don't know that Ura jumping into yotsu straight away with a foe that so obviously physically outmatches him was the best of ideas, but it is what it is. Thorbjarn 214 Posted July 24, 2022 Did anyone expect Ura to go straight up into a belt battle with Ichinojo? Ichinojo had no trouble with this situation and handled it well, let's see if Takakeisho can make him the champion without a playoff.

There is still huge interest in the Terunofuji v Takakeisho fight in the musubi no ichiban, in addition the possibility of a two man playoff for a 12-3 yusho rather than an 11-4 yusho. Plus there's the increased chance of Ichinojo forcing open an extra komusubi spot. So still an interesting afternoon for sure.

Kiribayama may have made forcing the extra komusubi slots inevitable, no M1E to my recollection has been denied promotion to sanyaku with a kachi-koshi
Katooshu 3,135 Posted July 24, 2022 Should've been a torinaoshi in Hosh-Midori IMO. Hosh seems to have a lot of these super close calls at the edge.....
