Not counting this basho, would also basically mean, an 7th punishment basho for Asanoyama…

This problematic is so complex and there seems to be no fair solution for all rikishi.

I‘m curious how they will handle the banzuke.

More importantly I hope they'll tell us early. Otherwise GTB will be an absolute and utter crap shoot this time round.

Given that Asanoyama's punishment was for playing fast and loose with the COVID restrictions, there would be a certain justice in that.

How depressing is bridegroom Shimanoumi's performance this basho?  He was defeated by Chiyomaru's first successful uwatedashinage in 999 bouts.

This opinion will come as no surprise to those who saw my critical post about a week ago, but... Honestly, this is the exact same as Shimanoumi has always looked to me. He just hasn't happened to take a few random wins out of nowhere like usual.

Absolutely agree, but i‘m not optimistic for that, i think they will take a lot of time for a decision…

I understand your point of view, but in my opinion the punishment was hard enough, especially considering his father and his stablemaster dying in that time too…

Looking at the Makushita banzuke, it’s clear that Asanoyama isn’t the only one who will suffer from a generalized freeze in the rankings. All four of the top wrestlers have their kachi-koshi and are promotable to Juryo, yet they might all get stuck in Makushita (earning a pittance) if rankings are frozen. It’s a sad affair!

???

Both ex Asasekiryū and ex Asashio are still alive.

His high school coach died before he made ōzeki and his shikona previously honoured him.

The grandfather last year in June, his father in August, maybe somehow influenced by his punishment.

Due the COVID thing, this Basho is starting to feel more and more like one of those Charles Bronson movies that end for the lack of characters. The last one standing wins it all.

Hokuseiho's tachiai is so slow that whenever I watch his bouts, I kind of expect it to be called a "matta". He looks like a talented tennis player lacking a decent serve. As I am not the only one noticing this, it is fair to assume that he must have been working on that for quite some time now. Yet, he has nothing to show for it.

Please, don't speak ill of Shimanoumi. He has the thickest and by far the best hair in the whole Ozumo. On a more serious note, though, he is or at least used to be a good all-rounder, with a good technique on and off the belt coupled with good speed and overall solid balance. This time, however, he looks very weak as most of his losses are coming via power techniques. He even gets into some good positions, but is easily outmuscled. He looks spent and there must be some kind of underlying ailment or just age might have caught up to him.

Everytime I see him on the dohyo I'm surprised how small  he appears. He has the perfect build for sumo if only he hadn't stopped growing a tad too soon. With a bit more oomph he'd be a dead ringer for Musoyama.

FYI, I viewed Shimanoumi's db record and was surprised how few basho he competed in up to age 33.  Then I found one of those near-creepy coincidences: He took only a year to go from Jonokuchi to Ms4 (with three 7-0 basho), then severely injured himself in Nagoya 2013 in a match with ... Chiyomaru!  It took 5 basho before he returned at Jk18.

I know it's been a crazy basho, but it would be even crazier if Kinbozan doesn't get promoted with an Ms1 6-1 while Ishiura stays in juryo.

Obviously there's a bigger picture than any particular rikishi, but I think they need to find some way of accounting for KK and non-Covid imposed MK guys.

He isn't that small, though I agree that a couple of inches more would do no harm. I tend to see him as a Musoyama without A/C, Navigation and all the fancy stuff they add to cars these days. He is the basic version, but it is a good version.

The hectic social schedule surrounding Japanese weddings has had an impact on many performances.

If they don't say anything, then it will be the first time people will actually play what the game is called (Guess the banzuke)

More seriously,  think that once they announce the Juryo promotions the week after the basho we will have an idea. Assuming they will keep with the schedule of announcing that day. Although we also need to see the final picture on day 15 of the final score of Tochimaru, Kaisei, Yago, Roga and Kanno.

Tamawashi has long been one of my favourite rikishi. When interviewed, always seems like a really nice guy. I'm sad to see his consecutive match record disrupted by all this, after more than 18 years without missing a match.

I read somewhere (I forget where) that the NSK will allow his consecutive match record to continue, as if this covid-related absence never happened. Does anyone have a source to corroborate this?

Also thinking of Nishikigi and Tobizaru, who I believe had never missed a match either!

In thinking over all the suggestions that have been made on how to handle the Aki Banzuke, I've come to the conclusion that no matter what, every single decision that the Banzuke-makers make is going to be unfair to someone.  If they try to be fair in one regard, it will be unfair in another, and so on and so on.  I feel like @Seiyashi.  My head hurts, too.

That's why I think they will take the easy way out, do nothing and leave it as it is. Doing nothing is always the easiest, if rarely best, course of action.

instead of freeze, allow a one up or one down corridor of movement for each COVID rikishi.
