Well, it took him a long while, but Ryūden finally overcame Hokuseihō to more or less guarantee himself the jūryō yūshō. Interestingly, Hokuseihō's mass is still working for him at this level; despite Ryūden being clearly on the initiative for most of the bout, and managing to unsettle Hokuseihō repeatedly, Hokuseihō just needed to lean against him and shut early attempts down.

If I heard the commentator right, Nishikigi and Tobizaru also had their 100% bout attendance broken, although naturally neither has as illustrious a streak as Tamawashi.

I could be wrong because I wasn't listening closely, but the commentator just said that it was their first kyujo since they entered sumo. I also thought he said that Tamawashi's streak would continue (継続する) but if mistaken someone please correct me.

Asanoyama yūshō interview now. He looks very different, much more... grim. You can see it in his eyes which look a lot blacker.

I hope it translates to good things in his sumo.

Mitoryu being invited up from Juryo to accept a fusen win as Makuuchi’s opening bout is quality farce.

(First in the schedule anyway. Was it the first done? I know they don’t like to end on a fusen so will adjust the order. Is that true for starts too?)

Yeah. If the final bout of the day is to be a fusen, they usually bring it forward one so they can end on an actual fight. Wasn’t sure if they did the same at the beginning or not. Never noticed.

If you think that's bad, wait till the parade of fusen. They've gone through too many matches to try and stagger them so it looks like they'll do it all at one shot.

Hōshōryū single-handedly reviving the old custom of nirami-ai. Not that that's a bad thing this basho, with all the dead air to fill.

The bout itself was a beaut too. Nice tachiai, lock up, then wham bam thank you ma'am.

This is fraud and should not be accepted by the audience without outcry. 
Seven fusen out of 18 matches planned for today on the list... that's a 39% drop-out rate.
what about day 14 and 15 ? can they get enough matches together ? you need rikishi that havent fought each other from different stables...

This is a little detail that I've always found both fascinating and underrated. There's a very thin balance between having enough bravery or a death wish, but we can also easily tell when a rikishi isn't willing to put his all into it just by that.

Goeido for example - he gave away a bunch of losses on his last couple of basho due to being so quick to pull the trigger in this peculiar game of chicken, even from otherwise advantageous positions that'd give him the shiroboshi had both just gone belly first into the ground. That was an early sign he was mentally done with the dohyo.

So here is a hypothetical question for the sumo pundits on this forum:

The Top Division matches for day 13 were set presumably before the day 12 bouts were even fought.  Then came the sluw of Covid-related forced kyujo (7 wrestlers in total).  What would have happened if both wrestlers in one torikumi match-up had been forced to withdraw?  How would that have been handled in terms of white star and black star decisions?
