I had to laugh at the Abema commentator remarking that "he (Nishikigi) saw that well." I hope he continues to fight well and I, too, would be happy if he wins it. Don't take that literally! He needs spectacles with quite a bit of correction for his vision, but I'm fairly certain he can see a ~150kg rikishi 1m in front of him without them. Hoshoryu needs specs, too. It's not that uncommon.

Also nowadays with a lot of common reading material (phones again) being backlit, astigmatism is a bigger problem than it used to be.

Meisei lost the bout and was almost in tears. Then Isegahama Oyakata began talking to him in the dressing area and making hand gestures, as if he was coaching him on what he (Meisei) should have done to win the bout. Meisei repeated the hand gestures and Isegahama Oyakata nodded. Then Meisei quickly bowed his head & said something (probably "thank you") and they parted ways. Interesting since Meisei belongs to Tatsunami Beya. Tatsunami heya used to be part of the Tatsunami-Isegahama ichimon before the Takanohana rebellion. Even after the split, Tatsunami rikishi have attended the Isegahama June training camp in Sakai, South Osaka every year. So they have a close connection that will continue even after Tatsunami oyakata retires (by then, the heya may return back to the Isegahama ichimon). pre Nagoya, Tatsunami sekitori did attend degeiko at Isegahama, but it wasn’t widely reported by the media and only mentioned on the NHK broadcast in passing. 1

It seems to me that what often doesn't get mentioned is that degeiko isn't only a good chance to spar with other rikishi, but also a good chance to learn from other oyakata. It used to be a staple of jungyō photos that you would see oyakata coaching or talking to rikishi who weren't from their stable, and no doubt the broadened perspectives helped some rikishi. 2 minutes ago, lackmaker said: Someone you knew should get their lenses checked. No, but as @Churaumi pointed out in another thread, the shimpan at least are unmasked and practically sitting in the audience, and it's not impossible that there's transmission from the audience members who are eating/drinking and therefore temporarily unmasked. It might not be a coincidence that of the three COVID-kyūjō heya, two of them are shimpan heya - Naruto and Hanaregoma. rhyen 1,809 Posted July 18, 2022 I wonder who was eating and drinking near Dewanoumi oyakata. in the broadcast today, they were showing the other camera angle for yesterday’s Terunofuji - Wakamotoharu match. With a loose mawashi, Terunofuji couldn’t leverage Wakamotoharu when the latter started his forward drive. In the rematch, with the mawashi tightened, it was easier for Terunofuji to fling Wakamotoharu around.

Lower divisions - two 2-2s and two 3-1s. Last thing we need is for Isegahama to be yoinked. That'll really ruin this basho with three of their rikishi in the arasoi. Yeah if you only pay attention to makuuchi (as a lot of sumo fans in general do) than only three rikishi forced out from four heya having to quarantine could actually have been a lot worse. Katooshu 3,138 Posted July 18, 2022 (edited) Re: Shodai I did notice that little smile after winning, was nice to see him without the forlorn look for once! Gospodin 187 Posted July 18, 2022 11 hours ago, Katooshu said: Terunofuji is a beast but he sure gets himself into some bad spots. Endo is 2-7 and has looked hapless in several bouts, but was on the verge of pushing him out there. Fierce attackers like Daeisho and Battle Hammy are coming up and could be tough ones for him. Takakeisho is using his left paw to great effect this basho. But I sincerely doubt it will be enough for Terunofuji. As for Endo - his dismal record comes from his now well-established struggles against oshi wrestlers. And yes, he drove Terunofuji to the edge, but to me it looked like the Yokozuna was never out of control of this bout.
Katooshu 3,138 Posted July 18, 2022 (edited) Getting pushed back right onto the edge is an interesting way of being in control! I'd say he was in control for 0 of that bout until the final sequence where he got the upper hand. We've seen him just keep winning like this before, but I can't say I'm filled with confidence in his sumo right now, and having faced only one sanyaku opponent (a loss) he has higher ranked opposition to come - most of whom are doing well this basho. Gospodin 187 Posted July 18, 2022 Without looking it up, to me it was a kind of read-and-react from Terunofuji. Granted, a tad late after a mediocre tachiai and his immediate counter failing, but he kept his calm, ring sense and strength to dispose of Endo.
Katooshu 3,138 Posted July 18, 2022 (edited) Having watched again, he wasn't pushed back as far or held there for as long as I remembered, though still the type of sumo that I think could open him up for losses. Sadanoumi should be a pushover, but I expect some good matches vs his opposition over the last 5 days. Edited July 18, 2022 by Katooshu
Gospodin 187 Posted July 18, 2022 I am stating the obvious here, but key is to get him in an upright position right at the tachiai and following through.Judging from his recent week two performances I am not convinced that anybody can do that.
