Nagoya 2022

Style wise, Fujiseiun is a bit like the makushita Endo. Really nice skills, though a bit lacking in power.

Right, yeah, so they’re moving with the times. Sumo feels like China in the sense that the Covid policy is the same as it was in early 2020, with little adaptation for the new variants of less severity. I’m dealing with all this zero covid stuff in Shanghai these days, hence why it’s on my mind and I see some parallels.

While it is true that Sumo can be a little behind, there may also be huge differences in accommodation both during and between tournaments to a lot of other sports. If cyclists stay in their own hotel room while being outside during the competition, it's different than guys hanging out in very close quarters indoors basically all the time during competition.

I think, football / soccer is a horrible example. The idea of those in charge of most professional leagues was that they deserve privileges and rules that apply to society in general should not apply to clubs and players.

In Germany the clubs of the top tiered leagues where very quickly trying to pressure politicians into allowing to resume play. And they succeeded almost as quickly.

Nishikawa was a far better shikona than Gonoyama...

Breaking!

Oshoma has tested positive for Covid-19 As a result everyone in Naruto stable is out of the tournament starting today.

It will be interesting to see what they do with the Naruto rikishi with 4-0-3 records next banzuke.

Sumo royal rumble … yusho goes to the last rikishi still in the tournament.

Belt came loose. Inosuke went to fix, Terunofuji saw it, Wakamotoharu didn't.

Wow, a lot to unpack there. Unfortunate because while the mawashi-tightening torinaoshi might have been justified, albeit ill-timed, Wakamotoharu completely lost the advantage he initially had.

That advantage including his very loose mawashi...

Not all that unusual for a gyoji to halt a bout to tighten a mawashi, though that’s probably the longest I’ve ever seen for a position reset. Usually it’s just a pause while the rikishi remain in place and then a quick slap on the arse to get the bout back underway.

Anyway, Teru wins and we have a whole bunch of guys back together all on 6-2. Teru has to be favourite now I guess.

Shodai wins to go to 4-4 and the escape is looking back on.

Inosuke robbed Wakamotoharu, Terunofuji had enough time to recover and think of a counter. Inosuke stopped the bout while they were moving, a bigger miss than a sashichigae, IMO
