My god ...what a finale! That lived up to its billing. Commiserations to Takayasu, yet again, but fair play to Wakatakakage. Star in the making.

Arguments aside, my little heart can't take this.

How unlucky can one guy get?

Epic battle. Takayasu's chances were not that bad too. Great way to end the basho, even if some were hoping for other result. Huge respect for Wakatakakage, Takayasu and Kotonowaka. The future of sumo is not that grim.

Waka took the win (Applauding...).  Luck had nothing to do with it.

Takayasu might retire from a broken heart after this. But congrats to Wakatakakage.

On another note, why was there a second gyoji (Konosuke?) sitting at the foot of the dohyo?

To my mind, Wakatakakage deserved that for that superb escape on the bails. What athleticism to withstand the attack, move to the side and turn the tables. A fantastic bit of skill and as worthy a championship-deciding move as I've ever seen. That didn't disappoint.

I meant with how close he was there. Another inch and Waka goes out.

This has been the fifth time in Takayasu's career that he went 12-3.
All JY.
Not a single yusho to show for it.

Yikes

Just as yesterday, Takayasu rushed it when he got his opponent on the bales. He got into that yusho race with patient sumo and lost 2 deciding bouts because he abandoned it.

Funny to think that after all that Daieisho gets the only open sanyaku spot.

What's the number for Wakatakakage's Ozeki promotion for next basho?  11 or 12?

Numerically, he’s had 9-6 and 12-3 now, so he’s on 21/30. 12 for a promotion by the numbers, but I’m sure we’ll have plenty of arguments about that in coming days and weeks!

Technically 12 (9+12+12 = 33), but I would not be surprised if 11 would do since he won a yusho here.

That's got to hurt for Takayasu and his supporters. Drops the first one, gets his hopes back up, then drops his 2nd chance after going on the offensive. Ouch. Double the sting. I feel for you Takayasu fans right now!

I reckon they’d want the 33 given the 9 wins wasn’t at sanyaku

I can't help wondering if Shodai's oyakata is tempted to ask him, "Hey, when you made that effort in the second week, why couldn't you do it in the first week?".

I still think he is on borrowed time as ozeki, Takakeisho too, once a bout goes to the belt, it's curtains for him.
