Haru 2022 Discussion Thread (SPOILERS!)

Around Ms3

It's worth considering that he's also faced much lower ranked opposition than Oshoma has - in fact, everyone Oshoma has faced has been higher ranked than everyone Kinbozan has faced, barring Chiyonoumi (who Oshoma is also 1-0 against). We should see some head-to-heads between them fairly soon; to my knowledge they only met once in college, which Oshoma won by uwatedashinage.

Kinbouzan, a well-deserved makushita yuushou. Gives a much stronger impression than his rival Oushouma so far. Going to go far. Can anyone give an estimation on where he will be on the May banzuke?

Agreed - excited to see what the future holds for Kinbozan. He should be ranked rather high in makushita, quite possibly at a rank from which he can then try to gain promotion to juryo

Takakeisho is definitely taking it easy after his kk, he doesn't seem 100%.

And that wall bang the other was from joy. you could see on his face he had some swagger, probably relieved he cleared his kadoban and can take it easy for the rest of the basho.

Oh, I am aware that competition was quite different for them. I just can't help but find him very promising not from the results alone, but from what he shows on the dohyou.

If you want to see a picture book example for "snatching defeat from the jaws of victory", watch Kotoyusho vs. Nishikifuji.

Links to NHK videos of Yokozuna and all Ozeki matches (with a bit more of the pre-match stuff than before), photos from nikkansports, results, match articles from Kyodo News, Tachiai.org, and nikkan sports, Kimarite and time statistics, Top rank performance, maegashira v san-yaku, and more. Nice Mainichi Shimbun Photo Feature today--7 photos.

I have added a "race" by Day table for the top contenders as a way to look at the whole of the Yusho race. I have also added a "race by Day table for the top 6 contenders in the Juryo Yusho race. Look for it under the videos, as one of the videos is of an important Juryo match

Enjoy

copied old # of Mainichi photos by mistake. Corrected to 7

Dang, Kitanowaka again not having a good 2nd week, although could just be the increase in opposition level rather than a drop in his own form.

Just a Jםnokuchi note- an awesome class this basho- 5 real prospects I predict all of them in Makuuchi in three years. Yes, too early to call etc.. but these guys seem the real deal, all of them. Kototebakari, Kotokenryuu (Mongolian, stablemates facing each other for the Jonokuchi playoffs), Wakanoshou (6-1), Hanafusa (5-2, Kisenosato's recruit) and Daiseizan (6-1, Inner Mongolia). All the losses are in matches between themselves. A helluva prediction, but a helluva class.

Little shocked in Jonokuchi on the Hanafusa v Kotokenryu bout.

And now we are down to 3 unbeaten lads in the division, and two of them are from the same stable. Potential in-house play-off between Kotokenryu and Kototebakari?

Called it!

He should meet Yago first.

Assuming Kanzaki doesn’t meet him first.

Does anyone do more flying into more acrobatic losses than Akua?

Kotoyuki?  Oh, right.  He used to run to his losses.

LOL!  That look Meisei gave after he "lost" Ura in the ring was so funny. If you missed it, make sure to see it, folks.  It's a blast.

(Laughing...)

I'd have that face too if I managed to lose someone the size of a rikishi in a confined space...

The body language and timing is hilarious too. You can visibly see the moment where Meisei must be thinking "where the hell did he go?!" and one beat later, finds out exactly where courtesy of okuridashi.

Hōshōryū not having the best basho either. Methinks he's trying too hard for throws.

Hoshoryu feels the full weight of Ichinojo's attack. Literally. That looked uncomfortable.

Stiffer competition may have a say in it, too.  But I think for a Sanyuku debut, he's doing Okay.

Mildly off-topic: does anyone know what's with the people in the ringside seats in the brown vests?

Ishiura's return from kyujo isn't working out.  He's doing more running around than anything else.   Ura should have an easy time with Ishiura tomorrow.

I read somewhere they are members of an Osaka Sumo club. Membership grant them front rows every Haru basho.

Ooooo, that was vicious forward movement by Abi. Possibly the best deashi form he's shown this whole bashō. He's retained his sanyaku berth and can still keep his rank with another win.

Maybe a coincidence or not.  Both Waka brothers have now gone KK for the 4th straight basho.
