I haven't checked but it feels like a few years since we last had a full complement of sekitori starting a basho, but that's what we have here.

The lower division list was lengthened due to the addition of COVID-kyujo Onoe-beya, which as usual I've listed separately from the 'regular' absentees.

Hopefully he's not out the whole 7 days; I'm not quite convinced he's ready to challenge for a salary yet but was looking forward to seeing how he performed at this rank. Would bet he was even more motivated to perform given his heyagashira's Ōzeki promotion.

Assuming this is the result of persisting injuries to both coupled with Naruto-oyakata's readiness to bench his guys when they're not 100%. Ōshōumi seems very injury prone which concerns me since he has shown signs of being able to develop into a very good rikishi. Hagiwara has been out since Day 3 of Kyushu 2021. He was making good progress up the banzuke although at a slower pace than Ōshōumi. Wish the best for both!

Add Sd28w Anzai, who has appeared in heya photos with a knee brace.  All three rose into mid-to-upper Makushita before plunging down.  Now only Oshoma and Oshoryu in Mk.  Heartbreaking.

In the lower divisions, one rikishi begins his basho while two others withdraw.

Entering:

Ms56e Obara

Withdrawing:

Ms38w Kyokutaisei - had to be helped away with what looked like a leg injury after his last bout.

Might be it for Kyokutaisei.

Wrong thread to ask but with 4 Makuuchi and 34 Juryo basho does he qualify for a position in a heya? I don't know the requirements off the top of my head, but I have a feeling he does. Provided he wants to of course.

Edit: to partially answer my own question, seems like the kabu requirement is 30 basho as sekitori (unless it's been updated) so he would qualify for one. Money and willingness are a different question still.

The Tomozuna stock should be available for at least temporary borrowing, but Kaisei may also be in line for that, so his long term future in the NSK isn't necessarily guaranteed.

Yeah, searching the forum a bit it seems Kaisei has acquired Japanese citizenship and has been mentioned in connection with the Tomozuna kabu.

He had it since 2014, I think. And he was one of Kaiki's deshi (Kyokutaisei fought out of the present Oshima stable only because of the closure of the old one under Asahikuni), so if the old shisho Kaiki has any say in who the Tomozuna share goes to, I'd imagine Kaisei is the clear front runner, with his tenure as heyagashira also having to count for something.

Of course, all this is forum hypothesising...

Tamanoi-beya provides the only lower division movements ahead of Day 7, with one rikishi rejoining the basho and another leaving.

Returning:

Ms17e Ichiki (withdrew Day 3, lost by mage-nage hansoku on Day 1)

Withdrawing:
