Now that's a desperate size split between jonidan and jonokuchi.

Def feels like there's been a steady stream of more retirements and fewer new recruits to match the number of leaves.

So the debacle with Tochimaru must have been someone without absolute authority telling the press who was going to be promoted, and that person made assumptions that weren't warranted.  They may have even been on the committee and was fairly sure what they were going to decide, but things shook out differently than they imagined.  My best guess is that they were not seeing that not demoting Kotoyusho was a possibility.

Nine shikona changes on this banzuke, three of which come from Tokitsukaze-beya. Yoshoyama switches to the heya's first kanji to become Tokisoma. Tokisakae already had the heya kanji, but he's now Tokihayate instead. Shimoyama gets his first shikona as Tokitora - now that we're into the Year of the Tiger, we might see more 'tora' shikona in the next few basho.

A different kind of tiger next - I expected Tanji to mark his Makushita debut with a shikona change, although I must admit I was hoping for something else than a simple switch to his given name, Taiga. As a result of that, the shikona's given name also changes to Koji.

An interesting break from tradition at Kasugano-beya, where Kawamoto's shikona Wakazakura avoids the heya's usual Tochi- prefix. Instead the first two kanji are those of Wakayama prefecture, shusshin of Kasugano-oyakata, former Sekiwake Tochinowaka.

A couple of changes from Onoe-beya - Nakao is now Meiko for his first shikona, while Banshunada drops his shikona and switches to his family name of Yamana for the first time (sort of - he began his career as Wakayamana, because his older brother was competing as Yamana at the time.)

Another tiger comes courtesy of Shikihide-beya, where Omote is now Akatora. The given name is still Takumi, but instead of a single-kanji version it is now the two-kanji version that is also his real given name.

Finally, Sadogatake-beya newcomer Kotokenryu changes the middle kanji of his shikona but keeps the same reading.

Ms35w Yoshoyama > Tokisoma (時蒼馬,  ときそうま)
Ms41w Tokisakae > Tokihayate (時疾風,  ときはやて)
Ms45e Tanji Taiga > Taiga Koji (大賀  孝治,  たいが  こうじ)
Sd3w Kawamoto > Wakazakura (和歌桜,  わかざくら)
Sd71e Nakao > Meiko (明光,  めいこう)
Sd91w Shimoyama > Tokitora (時虎,  ときとら)
Sd98w Omote Takumi > Akatora Takumi (赤虎  拓美,  あかとら  たくみ)
Jd35w Banshunada > Yamana (山名,  やまな)
Jk13e Kotokenryu (琴拳龍  >  琴挙龍)

(Note for @Asashosakari, looks like some colour code went to the wrong line in your Jonokuchi box, Kinseiryu is shown in red instead of Kotokenryu.)

Four rikishi make various alterations to their shikona given name. Roga triples his kanji, Kotodaigo changes one and the reading, Asatenmai switches a kanji back to that of his real given name, and Kaiyuma... well, see below for that one.

Ms12e Roga Chikara > Tokiyoshi (外喜義,  ときよし)
Ms29w Kotodaigo Akimasa > Koyu (晃有,  こうゆう)
Sd23w Asatenmai Seita (精多  >  晴多)
Sd83e Kaiyuma Keisuke (圭祐  >  圭?) - as Nikkan puts it: 示ヘンに右

Kaiyuma's change is one of those puzzling ones, where the new kanji is one that Nikkan can't display and the Kyokai site doesn't show any change at all. I'm happy to defer to the kanji experts to work that one out.

That's probably Yamana based on both the kanji and the kana.

Damn, and I wrote it correctly three times earlier too! Thanks for the catch.

That's the first thing I looked at; obviously no rank protection for Shiden, so someone royally screwed up. Poor Tochimaru; IMO not promoting him in favor of keeping Kotoyusho is the wrong call in any case, and the announcement was adding insult to injury.

The danger of adding tags manually in a hurry. Both guys named K*ryu, ranks 3 and 13... Fixed now, thanks. :-)

It was relatively stable until last May, but yeah, in the five post-basho retirement lists since then, the only one with fewer exits than average was November, and the one after the most recent basho was among the largest in many years. I was convinced we'd be seeing 94 or so jonidan ranks this time, but evidently they didn't want to drop below 100 for just one basho with the big Haru intake of new deshi around the corner. (I doubt they'll be able to put it off for much longer, though.)

I bet when Kotoyusho lost his fifth straight to finish on 6-9 he wasn't thinking he'd still be a sekitori today.

Just seems to be 圭祐, with the suke being an older? way to write it up. Due to han unification any attempt to search for it gets it auto-replaced with 祐. Seems like it is preferred to write 祐 in the Korean way of writing Kanji but that is so disused I doubt it has any real connection.
