New recruits Natsu 2022

Recommended Posts

So 7 of the 8 (+1 extra) passed the physical entry exam and wait for the result of the medical check, those who have passed are announced on day 1 of the basho (thus I wouldn't say they joined today).

The 4 from university: o

after high school graduation he was ronin for a year (those who doesn't pass the entry exam and go for the next try), then entered Keio university (also prestigious, but private), as first year he gave Todai a third try and made it. The sumo club fascinated him and he joined with at first 73kg - now he has about 105kg.

In middle school Suyama did baseball, he started with sumo at Todai  - I guess he first tried to join Kise as first year with less than 80kg, he joined the heya properly on the 13th and takes part in keiko now. He names as one reason to join that heya as his birthday being the same as that of the oyakata, Sep. 23rd. But he revealed: "I never have lived in a group and can't get used to it."

He wants to do a sumo like Harumafuji, his favorite rikishi. o o

with the Todai sumo club members, with a new 1st year member

Irumagawa-beya's Neri (Nelly?) Yamada appears to be a half-Nigerian with a judo background from Shutoku High School in Katsushika, Tokyo. He had a send-off there last month, and is described as a sophomore so I guess he's dropping out a year early.

@InsideSportJapan just posted this tweet - I'm curious who the recruiting oyakata is. With Irumagawa, in the photo you posted, set to retire next year, that might give an indication of who's taking over (ex Kakizoe?) - or at least who's handling recruitment duties. One would assume it would at least appear though it will continue as an active heya rather than being folded in elsewhere.

Each day the sumo news are full of articles about Suyama - the new celebrity. He wants to reach makuuchi within 3 years: he was the captain of Todai team, which ranks at the bottom of B class, just the middle in amateur sumo, is without any major results at tournaments. At his debut fight he had 74kg and by eating his favorite curry, he reached 102kg in his 3rd year - the last 2 years due to Corona he hardly did any keiko, which was 3 times a week in the Todai club. There was no strict hierarchical relationship in the club, getting used to the new situation is his work now: "I want to gambarize day by day." He still has 8 credits to get for graduation and has to find a subject for his philosophical graduation thesis (nothing sumo related).

Today he took part in asageiko for the first time, doing just the basics, especially shiko stamping - Inagawa-oyakata taught him the proper way: "It was severe, different from what I did so far. I really feel it in my buttocks." o o o

Well, I don't think he'll last 3 years in ozumo

Is it just because of the University stuff? Because Takahashi and Imezaki seem to have more promise (plus the first Rikishi with Nigerian links)

I believe that's the coach of the school's judo club with Yamada, but in any case, it's definitely not Irumagawa or any other oyakata.

I don't recall ever seeing an oyakata attend his new recruit's farewell event at a school, they usually have a separate visit for a press/media session to announce the recruit. (See the first post of this very thread for example)

Just because of Todai, the absolute top university in Japan. Being a Todai graduate basically guarantees a top job in business or government, so it's a wondrous thing that he wants to make it in this world instead. As Todai graduate he'll have no problem though finding a good job when he quits sumo, especially after this PR stunt he's doing now.

Two new urakata - a yobidashi and a tokoyama - have appeared on the Kyokai site ahead of the Natsu basho:

Joining Onomatsu-beya is 15-year-old yobidashi Jin (仁), real name Jin Sekimoto.

Joining Nishonoseki-beya is 17-year-old tokoyama Tokoni (床二), real name guess Yuga Hirai, from Sayo in Hyogo prefecture.

That sounds like he should've focused on getting noticed by Nishonoseki instead. His days are already numbered.

One new recruit was absent from the Natsu shindeshi-kensa on the 15th but was allowed to take it today, 16-year-old Miki? Yamada (山田 美樹) is joining Dewanoumi-beya. 171cm, 108kg. The official results for all the recruits will be announced as usual on the opening day of the basho.

Onomatsu-beya introduced their new yobidashi, who is from Ichihara, Chiba prefecture and got involved in sumo in elementary school. Along with his brother, he began visiting Kids Onomatsu in the 5th grade, but it seems he preferred the idea of being a yobidashi.

Suyama is the absolute celebrity of the basho. I can't remember a new recruit having that much headline publicity even for the day 1 announcement of those who passed the shin-deshi kensa. And today after his first win there are as many articles as about Terunofuji's bouts.

A convincing win

I guess he'll enjoy the hype and will go on for the proverbial 3 years even on a stone

With Suyama, there is more interest in maezumo than lately, today all of it was posted - he won again, against returner Wakaonehara. Suyama even gets articles in the morning papers, the Nittaidai pair has one or 2 articles a day, as usual early on, before the main news start to appear. Today the 2 met and Imazeki won.

Suyama is really something, not just a PR stunt: for his 3rd win in a row he beat Imazeki, the one deemed strongest in the field
