Narutobeya happenings

Honma has been on a good run since returning from injury. KK in 7 out of 8, and in both of his sandanme basho.

I agree.  He was the "amiable lunkhead" of the heya from the time Naruto established it with Oshozan, Torakio and Honma.  Only reaching mid-Jonidan after 15 basho,  he had a gruesome foot injury and fell off the banzuke.  His return came at the same time as an influx of higher quality rikishi, and the keiko must have done him a world of good: heading to mid-Sandanme next basho.  As a long-time Honma watcher, I am stunned.(Bow...)

Oshouma goes 3-4 at Ms4w, dashing sekitori hopes for the heya again.

The hopes would have been pretty slim even with a 4-3, but at least then he could've tried again next time without having to go 7-0.

Haru 2022 Basho summary

Shikona  score  current rank  expected rank 5/2022

Oshoryu  4-3  Ms36  Ms28

Sakurai  4-3  Sd36  Sd20

Mishima  5-2  Sd38  Sd12

Mukaida 4-3  Sd50  Sd33

Murayama  4-3  Sd59  Sd43

Honma  4-3 Sd70  Sd51

Kawamura  5-2  Sd100  Sd65

Oshouma 3-4 Ms4 Ms7

Hoshuzan  3-4  Ms50  Sd1

Marusho  3-4  Sd29  Sd44

Oshozan  2-5  Sd56  Sd79

Oshoumi  0-0-7  Ms56  Sd36

Anzai  0-0-7  Sd28  Sd88

Hagiwara  0-0-7  Sd66  Jd26

Yamane  0-0-7  Jd8  Jd78

Iwata  0-0-7  Jd90 (intai)

A depressing basho, with three injured Makushita-level rikishi injured and headed for Jonidan.  A total of 4 kyujo out of 15 active wrestlers.

Only two rikishi left in Ms for next basho vs 5 in Nagoya 2021.

Still, seven out of 16 made KK, and we can only hope that the injured will begin another climb up the banzuke.

farewell tweet from Naruto from Osaka:

He mentions the four kyujo kids, and hints that some of them may be back next basho(?)

And the only hope for sekitori promotion is a 7-0 by Oshoma.

That, alongside Kawamura's continued climb back up the banzuke, might've been the only bright spot of Naruto-beya's basho.

On the other hand, the rest of the beya seems to be on a downward spiral. Oshoryu might've KKed, but he usually has better results when that far down the makushita ladder. Oshoumi and Hagiwara continue to sit out of tournaments when they are both arguably of sekitori quality. Hoshuzan is slipping out of makushita, and both Marusho and Sakurai seem consigned to sandanme.

But the most worrying to me is that Oshoma continues to look unconvincing for a makushita tsukedashi, he might've never been the most promising collegiate champion but being Naruto's heyagashira off the bat could be stunting his development.

EDIT ONE DAY LATER:

Sorry @Yamanashi - only saw your post now, had this thread on Page 1 the entire time. It was much better than mine, didn't mean to take shine off it!

4/17/2022: A big cookout on the roof, with view of Skytree (more pics on their Instagram)

Hagiwara and Oshoumi are back in the heya, and the fellow front left may be the new man, Shuntaro.

And as usual, Shikimori Komei officiated the dohyo-matsuri. (Look at that outfit Kenta is wearing! Stylish).

Naruto Oyakata now has shimpan duties, appearing in Natsu basho during 2nd half of Makuuchi

His shimpan debut yesterday was in the jonokuchi shift, he can have more than one shift, today he also was in the makushita shift - one can check the daily shimpan schedule in the torikumi sheets: 2205_01.pdf  2205_02.pdf  2205_03.pdf  ...

Oshoma beats Hokuseiho and is 4-0 at Ms8 - he's now the highest rated unbeaten makushita rikishi, but can he pull off the 7-0 for promotion?

Joining Narutobeya as manager is OKUYAMA Shota, 31, ex-Sadogatake rikishi Kotofukujuno (Ms17) who retired in 2020.  He joins long-time manager Daigo Emoto, 38 (ex-Kotodaishin).

Well, the wait for Naruto's first sekitori is almost surely over; their SNS is about to start exploding with omedetōs anytime about now?

Context: Ōshōma just went 7-0 from Ms8e; promotion all but assured.
