Recommended Posts

Pavel Bojar (Takanoyama) met Czech MMA fighter Jiri Prochazka for a mutual interview about their love for Japan. Before the interview Pavel was teaching Jiri basics of sumo:

* Pavel was teaching Jiří. Otherwise the description is correct and the video is quite self-explanatory. Takanoyama's shiko isn't what it used to be, though…

Obviously...

If only Takanoyama had known earlier that the key to putting on some extra weight was retirement, he could have retired earlier and then he'd have been able to compete in Makuuchi.

Well, according to random youtubers watching Takanoyama highlight videos, he proves that weight doesn't matter in sumo and if anything being thinner is better

Every 6 months or so my MMA-fighter friend sends me a link to those videos as evidence that the muscular foreigners with the wrestling moves can easily dominate those big fat sumo guys.

Interesting content in following interview (not on YouTube, available in Czech only, via the website of largest Czech sports news outlet).

Seems like Takanoyama was quite under fire from his stable's okamisan after the death of his shisho, she blamed him for her husband's death. What is left unsaid but seemed quite obvious was that this pressure ultimately bore heavy influence on Takanoyama's decision to leave Japan for good.

He also talked about his scandal with extramarital baby, said he planned on retiring to save face of his stable, but his shisho convinced him otherwise.

Those two issues stood out the most to me from that interview (approx. 40mins long)

Should be filed under the off topic sub forum along with other post about him.

Akinomaki started "Rikishi 2nd careers" in the Japan-Japanese section.

For context, Takanoyama and ex-Takanosato were involved in a "doping scandal" where Takanoyama was alleged to have taken Takanosato's insulin injections in an attempt to bulk up. ex-Takanosato was also under investigation at the same time for allegedly beating a toriteki with a block of wood. The two investigations were in October 2011, and Takanosato died in early November 2011. So with that, I wouldn't be surprised if Takanosato's wife blamed (or blames) him in part for Takanosato's death, due to the resulting stress (and maybe because of the gaijin thing).

It's somewhat confusing that retired rikishi threads are spread in many different places (Japanese discussion, off topic, featured rikishi etc.). I think it has been discussed some time ago on one of those threads, maybe it's good to tidy up and move them under one subforum *just saying* (Sigh...)

Great to see Taknoyama again. Gym is set like a mma fighters place but interesting to see  Jigoro Kanos picture stuck in the window, kind of disrespectful.

I'd take it as a sign of respect that it's displayed at all.

Not sure how that is disrespectful. A lot of gyms with a BJJ side will have pictures up of  Kano Jigoro and then Maeda Mitsuyo, followed by the particular Brazilian lineage in question. Usually on a wall, sure, but as Katooshu stated featuring the pictures is a sign of respect of the roots of the arts (both BJJ and MMA) and the role Kano and his students, both direct and descendent, have played in them.

Typo (missing verb with respect to Katooshu)

Founders pictures are common in dojos around the world. they are placed in a place of honor.(shimoza) not stuck in a window definitely not a place of honor.
