Yamanashi 2,387 Posted January 24 Forget the cup, the macaron, the parade ... he got to give his speech directly in front of the Woman in White! I have to hurry over to that thread to see if there are any Romance Rumors.

Mita trains a lot with the boys at Kasugano Stable, so it is not surprising that a Kasugano Stable wrestler is carrying the championship flag. In his first championship win, Mita gave the nod to Tochiozan (Kasugano Stable), and in his second, to Aoiyama (Kasugano Stable). It seemed logical that Tochinoshin (Kasugano Stable) would be selected this time around. But Mita went with Aoiyama for the second time! I had this impression that Mita was on especially close terms with Tochinoshin. But this suggests that that may not be the case. Would Tochinoshin turn down the honour? I strongly doubt that he would. Edited February 1 by Amamaniac
Seiyashi 2,261 Posted January 26 Are flag carriers generally non-yusho winners? That would explain Tochinoshin's absence.

The optics of a new Ozeki having a former (still-active) Ozeki carry the flag seems ... a little cringey. Hakuho probably wanted to honor the amazing story of fellow-Mongolian Kyokutenho's yusho; besides, he's the dang GOAT, and was then (halfway through his 45 total Yusho tally), and he can do it if he wants to.

My current theory is that wrestlers who finish the tournament with a makekoshi are avoided, for the same reason losing wrestlers don't serve chikaramizu... Tochi ended the January tournament with a 7-8 record.

Tochi ended the January tournament with a 7-8 record. That does feel like it makes sense although as with every rule there are exceptions: Kyokutenho was flag bearer for Hakuho when he went 3-12 in his last basho in Nagoya 2015. But by then Hakuho is, well, Hakuho, whereas there's a new ozeki career to keep unjinxed this time... Edited February 9 by Seiyashi
