Asashosakari 18,959 Posted January 17, 2022 So there are no continental federation selections from Oceania in the women's divisions, but there's an IFS-selected replacement from Australia in women's lightweight? A bit puzzling at first glance.
Washuyama 638 Posted January 20, 2022 Woo-Hoo!!! Finally I can get to see live sumo again. Never been a follower of amasumo, but since Birmingham is only a two-hour drive, I'll take what I can get!

Katooshu 3,179 Posted May 3, 2022 (edited) 2022 World Games entrant and football hopeful Hidetora Hanada won a national collegiate tournament in Usa, beating Toyo's Odofu in the final. Nittaidai teammate, defending amateur yokozuna, and fellow WG entrant Daiki Nakamura was supposed to have competed in the tournament according to the Nittaidai blog, but he didn't appear for the individual tournament and I can't see his name in the team results either. Inside Sport Japan 762 Posted June 1, 2022 (edited) Hidetora Hanada should be in Alabama but is also still training for football. He's been a participant at Obic Segulls' practices - though as a college student he can't actually join the team. Katooshu 3,179 Posted June 1, 2022 (edited) Picking up football doesn't seem to have hurt his sumo so far.....I think he's lost just 1 match all season? Definitely the #1 in college sumo with Daiki Nakamura out at the moment. As a sumo fan I do wish he'd go straight to ozumo rather than playing football, but it is an interesting path he's chosen. I just wonder how long he sticks it out if he can't get a contract and is playing unpaid.... Edited June 1, 2022 by Katooshu

He isn't playing at all, just training. He won't be able to join an XLeague team or tryout for the CFL / NFL until he graduates. He could play football for his college - NSSU are a tier two team in Kanto - but he doesn't seem interested in that and is going straight to a higher level of practice. Asashosakari 18,959 Posted June 17, 2022 I wonder if it's a specific sumo issue or one affecting other World Games sports as well. Skimming the regulations of the relevant visa classification, I'd say that a narrow reading of the requirements would cause most athletes in purely amateur sports to fail.
