He's had a very successful corporate sumo career but always falls short when it comes to the major titles, despite seemingly having the tools to win on the right day. Incidentally, he has one of the slowest pre-match routines I've seen..... Seeing Tanaka on the far right there makes me wonder what could've been of him as a pro. He beat Oshoma to win the East Japan Student Championships in his final year, and was the top competitor out of him, Nishikawa/Gonoyama, Kanno, and Kazekeno while they were teammates at Chuo. I'm pretty sure that the original draw published yesterday had 16 in men's middleweight, too. Odd. Edit: Or maybe that wasn't a draw yesterday at all, just a screw-up. The original session program [there's a revised one as well] had all three men's categories with the competitors grouped by country, which is clearly invalid. About an hour behind live (the karate coverage went long and was itself about 10 minutes behind live already), but to my surprise they're apparently going to show the full session regardless. They should've upheld the initial win for Egypt, but done an announcement about celebrations and given the athletes and coaches a talking to. Reversing the decision, then ordering a rematch after Osu's tirade, only for the Egyptian guy to win again got them nowhere, turned it into a circus, and ultimately rewarded the outburst. Yell loud enough and get your way....... Incidentally, would be interesting to see him compete in the amateurs again....I remember him posting here before he turned pro. Apparently he'd been warned prior to the backflip which was the nail in the coffin. Understandable frustration, but terrible outburst. Ended up costing the Egyptian team members their place in the open-weight, and may lead to further sanctions yet.
