Who is going to the Games next weekend? I don't post much here; I'm more active on the Sumo ML. But I have tickets for Saturday (only, unfortunately).

(now going by) Oyama

4th or 5th time he's won that event I believe. He's had a very successful corporate sumo career but always falls short when it comes to the major titles, despite seemingly having the tools to win on the right day. Incidentally, he has one of the slowest pre-match routines I've seen.....

Seeing Tanaka on the far right there makes me wonder what could've been of him as a pro. He beat Oshoma to win the East Japan Student Championships in his final year, and was the top competitor out of him, Nishikawa/Gonoyama, Kanno, and Kazekeno while they were teammates at Chuo. At 180kg with skill and a large bag of techniques, he had the right stuff for ozumo.

Nice interview with North American Sumo Champion Andrew Rodin. Print and video

Also very briefly profiled on the official website due to a different angle of his participation:

Quote

At least five athletes connected to the State of Alabama are expected to compete at The World Games 2022 in Birmingham, which begins Thursday with the Opening Ceremony presented by Alabama Power and runs through July 17. (...)

Three of the athletes are attached to the University of Alabama – softball players Haylie McCleny and Montana Fouts and waterski trick competitor Anna Gay, a recent graduate of the state’s flagship university.

The other two Alabamians competing at The World Games 2022 will be part of the martial arts competitions — Andrew Roden, of Guntersville, in sumo, and Raio Campos, an Alabama National Guardsman who lives in Columbiana, in ju-jitsu. (...)

Andrew Roden

Sport: Sumo

What to know: A native of Guntersville, located about 75 miles from Birmingham in northeast Alabama, Roden began sumo wrestling 2020. Today, just two years later, he’s representing the U.S. at The World Games 2022. He said he believes he is the only sumo wrestler in Alabama.

Hmm, three absences in men's middleweight, while all other divisions started with the full allotment of 16 competitors. I'm pretty sure that the original draw published yesterday had 16 in men's middleweight, too. Odd.

Edit: Or maybe that wasn't a draw yesterday at all, just a screw-up. The original session program [there's a revised one as well] had all three men's categories with the competitors grouped by country, which is clearly invalid. The listed women's matches were already correct and what's been taking place today.

The 2022 World Games is live on Olympic's Youtube channel. Probably we'll see some sumo there

Weight class semifinals etc. being broadcast there now. About an hour behind live (the karate coverage went long and was itself about 10 minutes behind live already), but to my surprise they're apparently going to show the full session regardless.

Sumo can be watched in the ongoing live stream by  jumping back 5 to 8 hours. Nakamura beat Igarashi in the sf, the bronze medal went to another nation, Brasil.

Nice to see Osunaarashi with the (controversial) Egyptian light weight champion (brother or other relative?).

It's amazing Osunaarashi lasted in the NSK as long as he did.

And doing good work here to ensure he'll remain the longest-lasting Egyptian for a long time to come.

He should've handled himself better, but on the other hand reversing a decision because of a celebration is going overboard in my view. They should've upheld the initial win for Egypt, but done an announcement about celebrations and given the athletes and coaches a talking to.

Reversing the decision, then ordering a rematch after Osu's tirade, only for the Egyptian guy to win again got them nowhere, turned it into a circus, and ultimately rewarded the outburst. Yell loud enough and get your way.......

Incidentally, would be interesting to see him compete in the amateurs again....I remember him posting here before he turned pro.

Apparently he'd been warned prior to the backflip which was the nail in the coffin.

Understandable frustration, but terrible outburst. Ended up costing the Egyptian team members their place in the open-weight, and may lead to further sanctions yet.

I'm with you to an extent on letting celebrations go, but wow IFS, if you make a decision, stick with it. What a dumpster fire.

There's another sumo block supposed to be broadcast in a couple of hours, which I'm assuming will be the open weight preliminaries.

Didn't happen, contrary to the posted schedule. The open weight finals received a repeat at an entirely different time, but that was it.
