Gurowake’s fine historical scholarship to work out the true holder of the shield notwithstanding, Tamawashi takes it from Terunofuji in 2022. Terunofuji held it for five wins.

Tamawashi held it for just one day after being easily outmuscled by Mitakeumi.

Wouldn't it be funny if the sekitori found out about this, and everyone knew who was the current carrier of the ancient and honorable "Ranfurly Shield"?

Nagoya 2022:

Day 1: Wakatakakage loses it to Ichinojō.

Day 7: Ichinojō, remaining perfect so far, loses the shield to Shōdai.

Day 13: Shōdai drops his only gobansen bout to Takakeishō, who promptly loses in on day 14 to:

Day 14: Wakatakakage, who goes into the final day holding the shield, but may lose it again to his senshūraku opponent... Shōdai.

Thanks, completely forgot about that match considering what else was at stake on Day 15.

So Shōdai gets the Ranfurly Shield to top off possibly his most amazing comeback to date. How long will he hold it for this time?

(At the cost of making work for someone else - I wonder how the records for streaks holding the shield look like. Hakuhō probably leads by quite a margin but seeing how it goes all over the place the rest of the leaderboard might look different to what we think.)
