Nishonoseki at one of his talk shows met with a now 11 year old  local boy who aims for gyoji, Taichi Hiraki

Nishonoseki showed how important his sponsors are for him - they are the ones who allow him to provide those gorgeous premises: just one day before the opening of his heya, he was in Fukuoka at the opening of a new AI-koumuten showroom for a talk show o

The boy became a big fan of ozumo after watching asageiko at Tagonoura-beya when he was 6 years old (Kise was still active then). He especially likes gyoji - unlike many of us, he is a big fan of the present top gyoji, the 41st Inosuke.

Nishonoseki on the 30th held a lecture about his intai motto: no regret at all on my sumo path

In Takayama, Gifu, in front of about 300 listeners, sponsored by the local rotary club. He broke his right hand as a baseball boy in middle school, learned to do things with his left, but broke his left wrist during sumo keiko. He suppressed the pain and worked on techniques to cover for it, leading to his trademark left ottsuke.

Nishonoseki on the 30th in Yuuki, Ibaraki in front of about 800 listeners had a lecture about development of human resources - the transient and immutability in it 人材育成の不易流行. About his injuries: "The pain disappeared in an instant with my intai press conference. Likely a mental issue. Presently in ankles, knees, hips, neck - no pain at all."

Now scouting and guidance of deshi is his main activity, he is thinking about sumo more than when he was active, uses videos to guide his deshi, emphasizing the proper use of the basics.

a96dd4abfd467fb2adc25d0fba19ffa9_1.jpgo

- his career was cut short by injuries, so he is particularly taking care to avoid that for his deshi - the opposite of Miyagino with his long career including fighting injured

Because he's shimpan now, Nishonoseki won't appear as guest commentator live on NHK sumo broadcasts any more, but he'll do that again for the NHK-G broadcast from the rugby world cup in France, on the secondary audio channel for the match Japan-Samoa on the 29th. http://www.sanspo.com/article/20230927-FTWPVXOGFNFMDIVN25ZT3MT5QE/

Nishonoseki on the 2nd held his standard lecture "Not a shred of regret in my sumo life" in Takaoka, in Asanoyama's home prefecture Toyama, and talked about Asanoyama as the hope for the next yokozuna: "If he acquires the technique, he will have a formidable strength. When a Japanese yokozuna arises, it is an excitement in the sumo world, and I think Asanoyama is (the) first on the list."

Edit: a banzuke has a top for east and west, two as first on the list

Nishonoseki was one of those explicitly bashing Takakeisho for his bad sumo at the basho - it is not just fan service for the Toyama locals that made him say this, just now with another Japanese on a yokozuna run - like most of us here he is sure that TKK can't make it. And of course he has to take the opposite position to Miyagino, who hopes for a good result in Kyushu.

Edit: we don't know what else he said, the media only report what they want

I find it odd to call someone 29 years old who just scored 9 wins from M2 a Yokozuna candidate.  At least wait for him to get back to Ozeki, which I don't have much faith in happening.

Nishonoseki is not the only one calling him that, that is the general mood and the general hope. It doesn't have to be rooted in reality and may disappear in an instant if something happens again that puts him out of contention

Unfortunately, Ibaraki has a very bad image among Japanese as a backward agricultural province full of people having complexes towards their own origin. So, while Nishonoseki is quite funny and might make some people reconsider that notion, this prejudice would still hinger in decades to come.

When I tell a Japanese that I have been there they are an awe as if I went to the moon. And I have been there several times. Kairakuen in spring is quite nice. Fukuroda Falls in winter provides for great shots and if you cannot go to DC to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, then Tsukuba’s quite good alternative too.
