Akinomaki 40,670 Posted December 23, 2021 (edited) 2 from Saitama Sakae high join ozumo for a Hatsu basho debut: the younger Tebakari 手計太希 (Taiki, on the right, 18, 183cm, 123kg, the next from Kashiwa, Chiba) goes to the same heya as his brother, Sadogatake, so we get the next Kototebakari. He won the Kanazawa national high school tournament in October. "Seeing my brother's activities as sekitori, I thought I'd like to gambarize as well. I want to become a rikishi strong on the dohyo and gentle when I step down from it." The other is Shoichiro Takeda 竹田章一 (18, 177cm, 125kg, Tochigi pref.), he joins Tokiwayama-beya, with sempai Takakeisho as the top. He was runner-up at the national high school tournament in January. "I want to do a sumo where the opponent can't do anything, like the ozeki." - another tsuki-oshi specialist. https://www.sankei.com/article/20211223-E7AQ7E6V3JI7DOZ57M27LVMB3A/ Edited December 23, 2021 by Akinomaki 5

Joining Tamanoi-beya is A Boy Named Daiki Sue? (末 大輝), a 4th-year student at Kyushu Institute of Information Sciences. He hails from Chikujo, Fukuoka prefecture, although originally he was from the town of Shiida, which merged with Tsuiki in 2006 to create Chikujo. According to the article he is 184cm, 137kg and the sixth to join ozumo from the Kyushu Joho sumo club, among the others is Tamanoi's own Azumaryu. Tamanoi-oyakata (former Ozeki Tochiazuma) visited the university to meet his newest deshi, joined by president Takashi Aso. Daiki Sue (22) entered Tamanoi-beya this month, so I guess he'll be in the Hatsu basho. The 4th rikishi from Chikujo, the town today posted an interview with him. He looks forward to fight against Shohozan. 1

I exaggerated it a bit of course with this wording, expecting a remark. 3 years to sekitori is his one goal, fighting Shohozan his other - with the hope that Shohozan is still sekitori in 3 years or that he'll continue if he drops down to makushita, the other way round as the youngsters that Hakuho hoped to fight one day. (Should we make a list of those, plus those who hoped to fight Hakuho and how close they got to it?) Sue, the guy could have used the usual almost impossible goal, "I want to be yokozuna one day", instead he gave this, as a reverence to the top active sempai from his region. Yubinhaad 11,728 Posted December 28, 2021 Five new recruits in total. Sue's shikona will be Toseiryu (東誠竜, とうせいりゅう). The five will be joined by the two foreign shindeshi held over from last basho, Arashio-beya's Ashuhada and Sadogatake-beya's Bilguun - the full shikona of the latter has been revealed as Kotokenryu Takeaki (琴拳龍 武明, ことけんりゅう たけあき). 1

Katooshu 3,265 Posted December 29, 2021 (edited) Some good quality in this group. Takeda is a sharp and quick oshi specialist, though a bit lacking in strength if someone gets hold of him, reminding me of Chiyonoumi. Tebakari the 2nd is awkwardly skillful (looks a bit clumsy at times) and has some flashy tricks up his sleeve; fans of high leg shiko will like him too and followers of Chris Sumo have probably seen him already. Both have been among the top amateurs in their age group in middle school and high school. By far the best in this group though is Tetsuya Ochiai, who just qualified for a Sd100TD as a high schooler and perhaps will join ozumo soon - we will see. Hanafusa's a bit small but fights hard and has gotten numerous good results, including winning arguably the most prestigious regional tournament (Kanto) and defeating each of the Saitama Sakae competitors above. Sue was a respectable collegiate rikishi, though was not among the upper tiers of competitors, and being a makushita mainstay seems more likely than sekitorihood. Between these four and the two foreigners, a fairly interesting group in which most of them have strong sumo backgrounds. Yubinhaad 11,728 Posted January 5, 2022 (edited) Iwakiri is from Kagoshima and has been given the shikona Satsumasho (薩摩翔, さつましょう), in honour of the pre-Meiji Satsuma Province which is now western Kagoshima prefecture. He attended Kagoshima Commercial High School before going on to Nihon University, so he should feel at home in Nichidai-led Oitekaze-beya. He was in the Nichidai sumo club but perhaps didn't play a major part in their competitive teams, as I don't find his name in our amasumo section.
