It's looking like we will have significantly more eligible contenders for lower sanyaku than slots available. That might have been the very last "classic" Tochinoshin-Ichinojo bout, I thought as I watched it
Kintamayama 44,646 Posted January 23, 2022 (edited) Since I'm regarded here as the guy who is always wrong, here are my thoughts, to live up to my name: Abi-my favorite guy, I'm not convinced he's gotten any better. Sure, he had an awesome basho, but he was M6 till day 10 opponent- wise. We'll see the truth next basho. Mitakeumi-adequate Ozeki, don't see him as Yokozuna. Houshouryuu-Yokozuna. A bit more weight and he has the whole package. He was ranked quite low, but was looking good even in defeat. Terunofuji- out of March. Who knows how he really is. Takakeishou- Ozeki forever Wakatakakage, Ichinojou, Takanoshou, Daieishou, Ounoshou, Meisei, Abi, Kotonowaka, Kiribayama, Ura (if he stays healthy) , Hokutofuji - will alternate at the sanyaku/joi ranks forever. Kitanowaka, Atamifuji, Nishikawa, Oushouma, Kinbouzan, Kanno- the future, 2 Yokozuna in there, but I'll be dead by then. Shoudai- Yokozuna. He will be reborn. All he needs is back-to-back yushos in March-May. Edited January 23, 2022 by Kintamayama 7

Kuhne 57 Posted January 23, 2022 What a nice tourney for Mita, 13-2 record and beat a Yokozuna in the process. A lot of it is mental and there are guys that may be more consistent than Mita but they don't have what it takes to actually go and win a tournament, they crash and burn near the end. Mita has show three times that he knows how to win these things, to me personally having 3 yusho is way more impressive than being an Ozeki. But I am happy he is also getting promoted. Alas, you are probably right (protestations notwithstanding), though Ichinojo's lower back is past its prime. They will be like those late 60's pop conglomerations with lots of pleasant, entertaining songs featuring a different lead singer for each one. I claim dibs on the name "Sanyaku Association." He'll show up, lose some and then pull out even if he should really be sitting from the start. He will do keiko leading up to the basho that makes his recovery longer. I read some of his oyakata's musings in a book, the guy seems borderline insane. Whoever convinced him to let Terunofuji sit as long as he did initially deserves some kind of award. Tiger Tanaka 222 Posted January 24, 2022 Congratulations to Mitakeumi!! Such a fun basho to kick off the new year. I have to admit, I didn't post during the basho for superstition reasons, as Mita kept winning! Has been my favorite since I started following sumo and so overjoyed at this success. His demeanor seemed different this basho and I hope he carries this into the next phase of his career. Ganbatte!!!

Good enough to win yusho multiple times, bad enough health to never make it back to back, and will go kadoban repeatedly as a result too. Benevolance 2,483 Posted January 24, 2022 My boundless pessimism about Mitakeumi's fighting spirit has finally yielded it's intended results, catapulting this rikishi to an undeserved ozeki position. I had always pegged Mitakeumi as the next Goeidou, but I think that Shodai stole the position and refuses to give it up. Well, refuses to give it up, but only every other basho.
