Nintendo should have provided everyone within throwing distance soft, squishy pokeballs to lob. Missed opportunity.

I couldn't understand why that wasn't at least a monoii or an outright win to Myogiryu - looked like a textbook utchari and Tochinoshin landed first. Unless Myogiryu stepped out while executing the throw, and that didn't look conclusive, I can't understand how he didn't win that?

It looked like a heel out to me, but I'd be surprised that the nearest shimpan caught it in real time.

Can I suggest origami paper planes printed with yen vouchers that the NSK kyokai can sell to people in the seats.

Have something like an Aldi cart rack outside.  You pay, say, ¥1000 for a zabuton.  If you turn it in when you leave, you get your money back.  Like Aldi, the NSK can make some money and also "virtue signal".  It's a win-win.

My thoughts. But why buy only 1? I'd have a stack sitting beside me, ready to go full auto (Zabutonflying...)

Zabuton the size of a teacup coaster …

Mitakeumi can be the first rikishi to win 3 Yusho before reaching Ozeki. I wish him a strong second week, the yusho and a promotion.

I wish him a strong second week, a doten, and the promotion.

I just really want to see Terunofuji pick up this third yusho, followed an historic 4th in a row from promotion in Haru.

I have a theory that the wrestler known as "Tamawashi" is actually a pair of identical twins. The guy who beat Terunofuji on day 6 can't be the same as the one that lost to Mitakeumi on day 7. In January 2019 Twin B got the 'flu on day 5 and Twin A had to take over for the rest of the basho.

On the other hand it might just be that Mitakeumi really has his number.

It has been already discussed somewhere. Mitakeumi has excellent average scores against pushers - he is good at stopping their assaults. His scores against belt specialists on the other hand are relatively underwhelming.

It's moments of brilliance like this that make me wish Hoshoryu was more consistent. He clearly has the tools to deal with most of the top division except maybe Terunofuji right now, but sometimes he just doesn't bring his A-game. He'd have been a sanyaku regular by now if he was fully living up to his potential.

The "clarified" hansoku rule might rival the concussion protocol in terms of how useless they both are in their application.

Unexpected kimarite (okuritaoshi) for Onosho vs Chiyonokuni. Chiyonokuni is definetly far from 100%, his legs buckled nearly all match basically.

Hoshoryu is still a work in progress. Today was great, but lately he became too fond of leg trips.

*Ooof* That tawara to the sternum looked painful. But i don't doubt Tamawashi showing up for his 1400th consecutive bout tomorrow. GO TAMA!

Tamawashi wins a nice brawl with Hokutofuji, but lands rather heavily, chest first, on the tawara at the end of the match. He rolls off the dohyo a little winded and straight into Meisei, and is visibly sporting a nice shiner on his left pec while receiving the kensho.

Chiyonokuni, on the other hand, becomes the first rikishi in a year to get his MK by nakabi. The previous hapless holder of this dubious honour was Kotoeko in Hatsu 2021.

Matches like this make me wonder if Wakatakakage is pound for pound the strongest Rikishi. The way he brushed Ichinojo aside looked so easy.

And yeah, that landing by Tamawashi and the reaction afterwards looked really painful.

It´s a pity that the presumably most talented of the Chiyo gang had his career derailed by so many injuries.

Sorry, should have specified makuuchi rikishi. If we are counting juryo, then Chiyootori in Natsu last year also counts.

Yep, confirmed: Mitakeumi picked up Shodai's sumo. The way he withstood Daieisho's thrusting attacks was weirdly reminiscent of Shodai's defensive style.

Mitakeumi! Nakabi kachikoshi! Stood his ground firmly and patiently waited for his chance to turn the tables. Only his second ever 8-0 and the first time he won the yusho 13-2.

Daeisho as tough a customer as expected, but Mitakeumi goes to 8-0. Tomorrow he will face Okinoumi, whom he has a quite even head to head record with. Also, week 2, so... Yeah... I have no idea how this will go

Mitakeumi officially brought Mitakeumi A in the second week. I admit I thought Daeisho would have been able to push him out first. A very nice surprise. Hope it will last until the very end.

I must be suffering from a really bad case of rose tinted lenses, but Ura's henka-ashitori somehow feels really cheap to me. I'm not sure I would have had the same reaction if it had been Terutsuyoshi or Enho, and I'm not sure why either.
