Hello from the American Midwest

Recommended Posts

Hello to all! My name is Krzysztof Kay and I have been a long time lurker here. I am a military brat, so got to experience sumo in Japan quite often as our neighbor was a huge fan (Thank you again, Mr. Taka!). I grew up on Chiyonofuji as the greatest of all time, never to be approached or matched (Perhaps you can tell who my neighbors favorite was?). The rise of Akebono and and Takanohana was just starting when we returned to the states and I lost access to sumo. I rediscovered sumo in 2014 after reading of Kakuryu's promotion on a randomly suggested news article (Those things can be useful occasionally). I have been active on the sumo subreddit but the recent moderation changes there seem draconian.

Hearty salutations from the Swami!

I agree, Chiyonofuji was the man.

The lead moderator/sub owner appears to have decided that all content besides the content they like is now taboo. The content they have stated they want to exclude is anything not directly related to a basho or sumo news. I suspect, based on comments made, that they will soon be restricting daily content creator posts. They've stated they don't want anything sumo-related and only want posts that are strictly about sumo. I can only guess that this is so they don't have to actually moderate the sub outside honbasho, since no one will be allowed to post anything except news articles and the biweekly henka discussion and more recently how redditors know more about sumo than John Gunning.

Ouch, yeah, that's rough for general discussion. That said, it's not unusual for Reddit to have that issue though, especially on topics that can be rather wide - I'm seeing it on some other subs I'm on. It's a problem with the format and business model in general, especially where the moderators take on much of the burden of regulating a community and are volunteers to boot.
