I may be pointing out the bleeding obvious here, but is it a tradition for danpatsu-shiki to he a held a week or so after a Tokyo basho?

It may be practicality rather than tradition. Get some more use out of the dohyo while it's still in relatively good condition and before they retract it under the floor again.

Tochiozan's danpatsu-shiki has been announced for 30 January 2022, and will take place at the Kokugikan

Tickets for the danpatsushiki of Kiyomigata/Tochiozan will be among the goods for tax payment to the home region (furusato nousei) for Sumida ward, where the heya is located. https://nordot.app/831088160105054208?c=39546741839462401

Maybe he´ll be doing CMs for that next. Presently Taka is doing that

Taka for the first time after intai has a stand-alone CM appearance - as image character for the furunavi site https://furunavi.jp/c/cm2019, to navigate through the furusato/hometown tax system: divert taxes to your hometown and get local goods and produce.

Every year a new CM set, 3 years in a row now for Taka https://furunavi.jp/c/cm2021

That tax system was introduced to increase taxes for the regions, paid by those who live in Tokyo, Tokyo among it is a bit odd.

Of course, matters of practicality often devolve into tradition when the reasons of practicality are forgotten.

It must be depressing for these fabled rikishi to have to wait and wait for their well-earned honors.  To paraphrase C. S. Lewis, "Always Intai, Never Danpatsu-shiki."  I hope they finally get closure on their active careers.

At the toshiyori-kai today, Shibatayama declared that the intai-zumo events next year may  have up to 10 000 spectators, about the full capacity of the kokugikan, if the organizers hand a safety plan for preventing infections to the Tokyo Metropolitan administration. https://www.sankei.com/article/20211209-TVTD3MKRXJIK5NFYK5YU3TZIBQ/

Izutsu (Toyonoshima) was at the Kochi shimbun yesterday to do PR for his danpatsushiki on May 28th. Posters are in production now, ticket sales should start in February. He had lost 30kg after intai, but had a rebound of 10kg then - he can't fasten the button of his suit. Last year he was ashamed to come in a suit, this year he has at last grown accustomed to it - and now he is ashamed to get "naked" in front of people (get into a mawashi) . http://www.kochinews.co.jp/article/detail/529190

Hakuho is planning his Danpatsu for 2023 ... there is still some hope to be allowed to access Japan by then!

Because there are 6 others ahead of him in the queue, assuming 2 per weekend post Tokyo basho. He would be slated for September 2023, assuming no disruption or queue jumping.

So if that goes ahead it will be a gap of 2 years, 10 months. Is this a record?

Imagine retiring from active sumo, and still having to deal with bintsuke for almost three years.

Late joke, but at least Aminishiki deals with less bintsuke than the average mage-wearing oyakata. Or maybe he's hoping if he goes bald by then he can get it over with faster.

Given the number of attendees to skyrocket, I expect hair implants.

Can you also add Homarefuji/Tateyama to the list? He still has his mage, just losing the weight.

The lower-rankers get one oichomage for their retirement ceremony, but these "suit and mage" guys are employees of the NSK, so they'd have to wear one every day to work, right?  How long is it between stylings, on average? [I'm assuming they use the tokoyama at their associated heya].

Done; I've also added Chiyootori/Sanoyama for good measure.

Just to be clear, they just need to wear the regular mage, not oicho.

Thanks for the clarification.  Still, a mage is a mage (to quote from the soon-to-be-published "Kintamayama on Sumo").  The pre-Covid retirees had their danpatsu-shiki and don't have to hassle with all that.

The 3 oyakata with upcoming intai-zumo events as customary were at the rikishi-kai (25th), to basically thank the sekitori in advance for performing at their (privately financed) event for free - the oyakata have to organize the event and need enough attendance to break even.

Rikishi-like again, Tochiozan, Goeido, Yoshikaze

Homarefuji/Tateyama is for February 19th. Probably a pared down/budget ceremony like Kotoyuki.

Since he wasn't with the 3 oyakata which have upcoming intai zumo-events, his apparently will just be a danpatsu-shiki, without hana-zumo program.

Starts at 1pm. So definitely no hana-zumo?

400 cutters at the Takekuma (Goueidou) danpatsuדhiki today, including ex-Hakuhou, Terunofuji, Takakeishou and Mitakeumi. This was the first danpatsushiki held in two years, the last one being Takekaze's on February 1st 2020, and was already postponed twice. "I was worried that because of the situation people wouldn't come, but I'm happy to say they came and it was heartwarming.." said Ex- Goueidou.
