Hakuho retires

Someone posted a video on YT of the last 30 minutes of the hair cutting ceremony. The children have really grown! The youngest daughter did real well on her speech.

It was great to see ex-Takamiyama take a turn with the scissors. In another YT video, ex-Daikiho was just crying his heart out. (Brokenheart...)

I can't believe that scumbag Steve Segal was there. I used to go to meditate with the Tibetan lamas in Honolulu a lot and he came to see them and tried to buy them off and make him a tulku. He is full of crap, nobody should let him do this stuff.

Segal is much worse than you describe him, but I will not spoil the party. I was also disappointed to see him there.

Mönkh-idere (?) - Tottori Jōhoku alum, currently studying at Dōshisha University and a member of their sumō club

Couple of threads from the university sports publication's Twitter account listing him in tournament results - from what I can tell, Demidejamts is their top wrestler

Looks eerily like his uncle - this pic is from 2015 though

Is there any particular reason Takakeisho and Hoshoryu accompanied Hakuho at his last doyho-iri? I wouldn't say there is a big friendship between those 3, but maybe I'm wrong. Nonetheless a great honour for both of them.

edit: BTW there certainly is a great friendship between Hakuho and Harumafuji... I can't lie, their little moment brought tears to my eyes... (Sadgoodbyes...)

It’s explained on page 17 of this thread

Man, I miss Harumafuji and Kotooshu.

The latter should man up, though. This comb-over won't do anymore. Embrace the baldness! We've all been there.

Especially Harumafuji. How Hakuho teared up, very moving.

Hair loss is mother nature's way of telling  you, your face is so fine, you don't have to draw attention away from it with hair.

Also Hakuhō's mother, accomplished by Hakuhō relocating his seat to the edge of the dohyō so she could reach it without stepping on the dohyō.

Thanks to Herouth via Seiyashi for explaining this. Just watched Chris's yt post and was thinking "Wow what an honour, they let his mum onto the dohyo" but I didn't notice the change of position. The old girl looked a bit frail but she's Mongolian so she could probably still carry a fully grown yak under either arm... and beat Steven Seagal in a fight.

Did anyone else find it strange that so many (presumably) Japanese did not stand to show respect during the singing of this anthem?  Surely it was announced for what it was and so they had a heads up  about what they were hearing.

I thought the same. Perhaps it's a cultural thing.

He looks a really different person without the mage, quite relaxed and mature. Hope he would be as successful as he was during his time as a sekitori.

I felt that the danpatsushiki was quite subdued, subtle, not befitting his achievements and stature. Probably, that was part of the deal not to be standing out. Once I criticized his suits, recently his suiting has been extremely on the point.

All the best as the Miyagano oyakata for the decades to come.

FWIW they didn't stand for Gackt's Kimigayō either, so it wasn't out of xenophobia or lack of respect per se against the Mongolian anthem.

My current hypothesis is that the Japanese draw distinctions between formal versions/arrangements of the anthem and "performance" versions, and simply assumed that the versions playing at Hakuhō's danpatsu were performance versions that didn't require the whole nine yards of standing.

The version of Kimigayō played during basho is a lot more formal in arrangement, and AFAIK they stand for that one, so it might be a bit more subtle than just generic culture with respect to anthems (pun intended).

One more possibility. At the end of the basho, attendees are specifically asked to stand for the playing of the anthem. Japanese tend to be direction-following people, and conversely, it would actually be out of character for them to take the initiative and stand during the danpatsushiki if they weren't specifically directed to.

Another channel with basically only danpatsushiki coverage (plus 3 old low-div videos), excellent quality, a different angle from a 1st floor seat, many of the others were from the 2nd floor https://www.youtube.com/@sugimototakeshi496/videos

- with dohyo-iri and torikumi from the intaizumo part, including Ichinojo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLZG8FHKrYM

The other channels I posted earlier keep adding videos as well

Asanoyama didn't gambarize here and lost to Shonannoumi https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eI2zU_E-FC0

I wonder how the kensho won at intaizumo are handled - managed the same way by the NSK or paid out in full at once

Don't know what it's like in other countries, but in U.S. at MLB, college football and NFL games, the announcer says "Please rise as (name of celebrity singer) leads us in the National Anthem."  Everyone pays attention, stands and sings. [It helps that this is done before the game begins, so the beer hasn't kicked in yet].
