I hope the schedulers give us Abi vs Hokutofuji soon. They are both tearing it up in the basement and look on course for double digits.

Terutsuyoshi's win over Ishiura would not have looked out of place in shokkiri but I don't think Ishiura was amused.

What's up with the small square tape on Hokutofujis chest? Hiding a third nipple?

A third nipple would be square indeed.

Hoshoryu seems to have been robbed.

Certainly deserved a mono-ii by my eyes.

Hoshoryu's thigh seemed to hit first but it was very close and he was the one executing the move so... I would have liked a re-do, but I picked Hoshoryu in Jason's contest so I'm biased.

I hear Ennio Morricone themes in my head when Abi mounts the dohyo in that black mawashi. Is it black, though? Looks like it could be very dark purple sometimes...

I don't believe I've seen a tsuridashi executed in quite the manner achieved by Terutsuyoshi over Ishiura. The fulcrum was Ishiura's shoulders!

Kotoeko looked like he just gave up against Ura.

Somewhat baffling that there wasn't at least a mono-ii on the Hoshoryu-Tamawashi bout...

That was some stupendous defensive sumo from Terunofuji today - hanging in there by his toes before manhandling Daieisho to the deck. One might argue that a yokozuna shouldn't find himself in that position, but he made me shout "Wow!" at my monitor.

Kyukoshuho wins with a masterful uwatenage in a great fight with Hiradoumi. That was beautiful.

Hokuseiho mysteriously kyujo leaving fans eager to watch his pro debut tourney disappointed. Might explain some of his awkward movement on Day 1. Maybe he’ll be back?

Enho’s hit and shift worked well and led to a thrilling tottari against Azumaryu. Another great fight of the kind that made him a fan fave from the 97 kg wonderkind.

Chiyoshoma goes berserker mode against Shimanoumi and blows him out of the ring and several rows deep.

Hoshoryu robbed against Tamawashi after a furious reciprocal onslaught of tsuppari and nodawa. No monoii? What? Should have been torinaoshi at minimum. Screw that, Hoshoryu won. Uncle will probably forgive that one. Nephew was the better fighter on the day, IMO.

Takayasu prevails after a marathon battle between two Colossuses. I wouldn’t want to watch fights like that too often, but once in a while, I think most fans welcome the slow burn test of strength and stamina.

Endo’s tsukiotoshi win over Miyogiryu was more entertaining than it should have been because 35-year-old Miyogiryu really sold it.

Okinoumi showed the value of a veteran’s experience versus a new Komosubi in Kiribayama.

Wakatakakage and Meisei are very well matched. Another highly entertaining bout, and I think we can expect many more of the same when those two go head-to-head in the future.

Shodai rebounded nicely from a Day 1 loss to best Ichinojo. I think it shows the mental toughness he needs to have at his rank. Can he maintain it consistently or keep getting rattled in his mind?

Takakeisho got the wave going nicely against Onosho. Looked strong and launched him good.

Terunofuji, well, what can you say? That was absolutely rope-worthy sumo and he ought to have silenced some critics and doubters with it. When Daieisho got under his right arm and into his chest, forcing him to the bales, 99 percent of us thought it was over. Confounding us all, we spectators with our hearts in our throats, he rebounds from ONE FOOT and executes a masterful sukuinage, the sound of which literally reverberated through the whole venue. It was seismic, that impact. Daiesho looked plenty sore making his way to the hanamachi, and for good reason. Terunofuji’s dohyo-iri is also looking well polished and authoritative.

I wonder if he had a flashback to what happened the previous day, and he wanted to avoid another dangerous "bowling-for-gyoji" incident... (Carriedawayonastretcher...)

Hokuseiho looked absolutely pathetic and clueless.  For all those claiming he's the great hope, I'd be amazed if he goes much higher in juryo.  Gawky, no technique and cumbersome.

Swami

How would you say he compares to others with a total of six basho of experience in sumo?

He looks gangly and uncoordinated to me. He's probably got some more growing into his own body to do before that goes away.

My initial impression is that it's just a shadow.  I'd have to see a video of it before I'd be convinced it was something other than the lighting at the particular moment the photo was taken.

I thought the same, but after seeing other pictures he's actually wearing a flesh-coloured knee support. Perhaps the discolouration is due to that being very tightly wrapped.

Impressive throw by Enho. On such days you wonder if everyone gave up on him too early.

The Enho throw versus Azumaryu today is the equivalent of the Hoshoryu throw against Wakatakakage back in September (the most memorable technique of the tournament).  The difference is that Enho is down in Juryo, whereas Hoshoryu is in the bright lights of Makuuchi.  Collective memory only works if everyone sees it.  Interestingly, the NSK has already clipped it and posted it on YouTube:

The kimarite ruling took a long time.  Can't say that I've ever seen tottari executed over a wrestler's shoulder!

For a definition between kotenage, tottari, kainhineri.

Looks like a bit of good old-fashioned cellulitis. If you have it bad enough your leg never goes back to it's regular colour. Ended my career as a swimsuit model.

Meh...he just taped it up a bit tight and the blood flow from the foot back up is constricted enough to cause some discoloration.
