That was in Juryo. Don't think anymore than 2 in makuuchi.

Exactly, damage to ligaments and meniscus of the left knee, 10 days to recover, and if he wants to, the oyakata will let him rejoin the basho. https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/202109210000314.html

Wasn't aware the basho was going on for another 10 days...

Really, the heyas should release whatever special ingredient they put in the chanko. Seems to be a miracle medicine, substituting for busted knees, torn ligaments, and all manner of injuries recover in half the time they should!

Shishi looks like a very late withdrawal today. Not listed on the official site yet, but just gave a fusen-sho to Chiyootori.

Sad. The dude should experience a full-length Make-Koshi so he can have that experience to improve by.

Totally agree. He has lots of potential, but he needs to ping-pong around in Makushita for some time to develop.

Takayasu's second fusensho this basho.

Okay. So what is the record?

With his kyujo pending, he'd be the second with two fusensho and one fusenpai after Chiyonokuni in 2018:

Is Takayasu's kyujo confirmed? I mean, he should, but he won't be the first or last rikishi to gambarise through an injury.

No, but he didn't look good after that bout. I wouldn't be surprised if he comes back though. I think most of that was just it was a long hard bout he really pushed hard to win. The toughest part of his schedule is done with. He won't KK but he could probably get 7 wins.

According to Wakafuji-oyakata (former Maegashira Otsukasa), the ring finger on his left hand has been swelling throughout the basho and causing increasing pain.

It just said he fell on his back, couldn't really get up and his condition wasn't great. Basically just described what we all saw from the bout. There wasn't any specific injury pointed out at least in the nikkan sports article.

Takayasu falls to the bottom of the ring in a loss to Terunofuji
[September 23, 2021, 11:54 PM]

On the 12th day of the autumn tournament, Takayasu (31, Tagonoura) submitted a medical report to the Japan Sumo Association stating that he would need to rest and recuperate for about two weeks due to a suspected sprain of the right latissimus dorsi muscle.

He was injured in a bout on the previous day, the 11th day. He lost 4-7 on the 11th day, and is certain to lose the san 'yaku position he had held for six consecutive tournaments.

On the previous day, the 11th day, he faced Yokozuna Terunofuji in the final bout of the tournament, and was knocked out of the ring. He suffered a blow to his back and was unable to get up, raising concerns about his condition.

His opponent on the 12th day, Tamawashi, was declared a no-show. In this tournament, the number of suspensions (including re-entries) at the Juryo level and above totaled 12, including Yokozuna Hakuho and the other members of the Miyaginobeya stable, who were forced to take a full suspension due to the new coronavirus infection.

Comings and goings ahead of the last round of lower division action.

1 Returning, 3 Entering:

Jk4w Yoshinofuji (withdrew on Day 9 with a 2-2 record)

Jk12w Inoue

Jk14e Ishihara

Jk14w Nakaishi

Withdrawing:

Ms8e Shishi (fusenpai Day 11) - as reported further up the page.

Ms19w Kirinofuji (fusenpai Day 12)

Ms22w Shohoryu (fusenpai Day 12) - hurt his right shoulder on the opening day and has been wearing flesh-coloured taping since then. Tokitsukaze-oyakata (former Maegashira Tosayutaka) says he has a torn trapezius muscle and tendon damage, and eventually the pain increased to where he had to pull out.

Jk11e Takatairiku

Jk13w Daitensho - likely concussion, he didn't seem to know where he was after the back of his head hit the dohyo hard on landing in the opening bout of Day 11 (against Takatairiku in fact, who is also out).
