National Sports Festival getting a name change in 2024

Recommended Posts

Mostly old news, but it had completely escaped my notice until now, and maybe others are interested...

In 2017, the umbrella organization for Japanese sports governing bodies decided to rename itself from 日本体育協会 Nihon Taiiku Kyōkai (en: Japan Sports Association, JASA) to 日本スポーツ協会 Nihon Sports Kyōkai (en: Japan Sport Association, JSPO), effective April 2018.

Along with that name change an alteration to the name of the organization's annual national sports competition was decided, to be implemented a few years down the line. As of 2024 - originally 2023, but delayed due to Covid-19 induced schedule changes - it'll be time to say goodbye to the 国民体育大会 Kokumin Taiiku Taikai (shorthand: 国体 Kokutai, en: National Sports Festival), and welcome the 国民スポーツ大会 Kokumin Sports Taikai (shorthand: 国スポ Kokuspo, en: Japan Games) instead.

Some purists/traditionalists somewhere must be frothing at the mouth. Defiling perfectly good Japanese kanji with katakana loanwords? The heresy!

They could have kept it kokutai and just change the kanji to the tai of taikai, but that would look like great country or something.

I think Japan Games might stick for national use as well, it would definitely be an improvement that way, having the traditionalists open up as well.
