The problem is the heya itself is quarantined, and even sekitori who live outside the heya need to go there for morning practice on honbasho days thus exposing them to any still-extant pathogens. The only reason the personnel listed in the OP are exempt from the quarantine is they weren't exposed and wouldn't need to go to the heya each morning to do their jobs. For Hakuho It's not too bad to rest and heal for two more months, probably also for Enho. For that big juryo boy, it's a setback. Anyway, since all the NSK have been completely vaccinated, they don't need to be as nervous as before they were vaccinated.

Previously infected and/or vaccinated persons can still catch and transmit the virus. It is also transmittable by asymptomatic persons. Infact according the the World Health Organization two days before symptoms show is when it is most transmittable. So the ban on participation is totally reasonable if not disappointing for those of us wanting to see win number 46 for Hakuho and Hokuseiho first Juyro tournament. But, we will just have to look forward to their dominance in November.

Considering the two sitout basho won't be counted for the purposes of things like beating fastest advancement to makuuchi, a free 4 months' worth of development is invaluable this early on in his career when he's only had 14 months in ozumo. That's definitely going to put an asterisk on his record breaking since he has an "unfair" advantage, but he might very well make a better showing of it in juryo the next time he can compete.

There goes his hope of beating Jokoryu's time to makuuchi record if both Jan and Aki are counted against him, IIRC.
Gurowake 4,054 Posted September 10, 2021 Since these type of statistics have no bearing on competition, everyone can use whatever method they feel appropriate in counting basho. If you count time you're pretty stuck with counting the actual number of months, but in counting basho if you want to count a forced-kyujo for Covid as a basho for them or not, it's up to you.
Gurowake 4,054 Posted September 10, 2021 Also, does no one care about Hokaho? Sure, he's 32 years old, having entered Ozumo when Hakuho was an Ozeki still, but he's slowly crept up the ranks and is in position for Juryo promotion, which will have to wait for next basho. Maybe his altercation with Ishiura really inspired him.
