Tamawashi applies for Japanese citizenship

Recommended Posts

Tamawashi is applying for Japanese citizenship. "I feel I want to give back. Still, it's a long way to go. In the meantime I shall be polishing up on my sumo," he said. He intends to stay on as an oyakata after he retires.

I looked for a source myself and couldn't find one, but Wikipedia had already been updated and gives the following as the source: https://www.chunichi.co.jp/article/291079?rct=sumo

I haven't tried to translate any of it.  However, Chrome translated it automatically while I was typing that, and it appears to be from the last paragraph of the article.

Interesting line from that translation: "It is a secret that Tamawashi's cells do not decline."  Not so much a secret any more, is it?

Maybe that's why they're offering him citizenship.

And only two and a half years later... Nikkan et al. report that Tamawashi's naturalization was announced in today's edition of the official government gazette. As far as I can tell he has opted to retain his Mongolian name in katakana. More details to come, presumably.
