But on second thoughts, you wouldn't have said Harumafuji, Kakuryu, or Kisenosato had that sort of "aura" either, at least not based on their pre-bout rituals, so it's not that much of a knock on Terunofuji that he doesn't either. We'll see how they feel in a couple of weeks.
Akinomaki 39,936 Posted September 11, 2021 (edited) The NSK added quite a lot information this basho - only on the Japanese side of course. On the overview page for watching the basho, the goods page lists basically every new and the always popular goods https://sumo.or.jp/Watching/guide/tokyo/spectator/607/ Edited September 12, 2021 by Akinomaki

I remember during the last 4-5 basho thinking (and I commented on it somewhere) that Terunofuji passed the "eye test" for dominating Sumo; most of his opponents looked scared, and they acted like they had no idea what to try against him. Many of them kept arm's length from him and circled, circled hoping to do ... what? Then he got hold of them and it was like watching caught prey go limp in a wildlife documentary. Benevolance 2,479 Posted September 11, 2021 But then he got promoted and the YDC was all, "You can't go using your secret Mongolian bionic terror eye lasers on opponents anymore because it's un-yokozuna-like". 2

rokudenashi 291 Posted September 12, 2021 Tuned in for Sandanme. Ooazuma's mage is something to behold. His sumo is not. Undefeated in regulation Fujiseiun goes to 15-0 after today's win. Naruto hopeful Murayama, veteran Shouketsu also with convincing victories. I have noticed less of the incessant Takara Leben adverts on the Abema broadcast, which is definitely a good thing. Akinomaki 39,936 Posted September 12, 2021 (edited) Oginosho looked like doomed after he reinjured his heavily taped knee in the bout and after mono-ii he had to go into a torinaoshi. He couldn't bend his knee at the sonkyo and was in visible pain during preparations for the repeat bout, but went forward at once and won. The only thing to to with banged up legs. Since we have no other thread, I propose to make this the discussion thread and add it to the title. Edit: NHK is really poor when it comes to lower div. bout information. The NSK doesn't mention the rank of the rikishi at all in those bouts, NHK for a few seconds somewhere during preparations, and no previous record. Abema is an improvement. Seiyashi 4,071 Posted September 12, 2021 Abema seems to have switched up its mike setup. It's catching a lot more crowd noise than I remember it used to, and the gyoji PA announcements echo a lot more. I guess in some senses it's more like being there, but it's also a lot noisier than I thought it would be in a COVID environment.
Seiyashi 4,071 Posted September 12, 2021 (edited) Yokozuna in the house! Terunofuji's arrival from the basement naturally covered by NHK, and he's wearing a very sharp red kimono with a tiger drawn on the back. Edited September 12, 2021 by Seiyashi
Seiyashi 4,071 Posted September 12, 2021 (edited) First mono-ii of the salaried ranks: Abi - Kaisho. Abi looks to have downed Kaisho with a close-run tsukiotoshi at the edge, but a mono-ii is called in case Abi's foot touched down first. But the subsequent explanation (by Kokonoe-oyakata, who seems to have gotten a mid-life crisis and is sporting some white hair and a good amount of bling) states that Abi committed hansoku by hairpull, handing Kaisho the win. Thorbjarn 214 Posted September 12, 2021 I made it for the Makuuchi Dohyo-iri and for Terunofuji's first honbasho entrance. I really hope his knees will make it through two weeks of the ritual. Not sure how active I will be during the tournament, but I will absolutely use this moment to wish everyone a great time and lots of fun & good sumo over the next two weeks. May your favourites be genki and find a way to properly (just imagine that word to be blue, dabedee dabeda) do their brand of sumo.

There seems to be some delay in Abema's schedule as well, as there's a lot of dead air at the moment: they just started their programme when Chiyomaru was already waiting in the hanamichi. EDIT: The Death Note won't be till at least an hour later, as it's after Wakanohana's "shin-yokozuna dohyo-iri explanation" at 4:55 JST. Some trivia: If I understood them correctly, Wakanohana was also commenting that it was Isegahama who taught him the Shiranui-style dohyo-iri. Seiyashi 4,071 Posted September 12, 2021 Wow, an uncharacteristic display of out and out brute force from Yutakayama. He gets to Kaisei's right, grabs the back of his mawashi and initiates a killer nodowa, then just manhandles Kaisei out and down. 3 hours ago, rokudenashi said: I have noticed less of the incessant Takara Leben adverts on the Abema broadcast, which is definitely a good thing. Seiyashi 4,071 Posted September 12, 2021 Ouch. Terutsuyoshi tries an ashitori, but Okinoumi's too experienced for that and has him in a headlock and shoulderlock before he can complete the pull.
