Aki Basho 2021 - Discussion Thread (Spoilers!)

One interesting thing that occurs when people tumble down the banzuke are the long gaps between rematches. Today's Abi v Akua match is the first time they will fight each other since November 2014, quite a large gap for sekitori.

Considering Abi was joi material and Akua only recently broke into makuuchi and is still elevator-calibre, Abi's demotion is probably the only reason they got a rematch this soon.

Four kyujos and a heya mate have Terunofuji dipping pretty low to  find 15 matches.

M6E only likely opponent I guess. Chiyoshoma 1-7 not likely and can't fight Takarafuji so from Day 11, K, S,S,O,O.

Abi (6-2) is going up against Akua (7-1).  This is a big match in terms of determining the frontrunner in Juryo.  Let's see who brings their "A game". ;-)

Still Nagatanien, so Terunofuji has only three sets and will use the big sponsor set for seven days

Sigh, and Akua fails to preserve the lead, resulting in the usual motley crew situation in the juryo arasoi.

While in makuuchi it's probably easier to count the number of times there have been more than two co-leaders by day 9, in juryo it's probably easier to count the times where there haven't.

What a throw by Hoshoryu. He was dead to rights on the bales and instead pulls out a win by ippon-zeoi.

That was one of the best ippon I‘ve ever seen.

Someone an idea why the gyoji gave the victory first to Wakatakagage?

Hoshoryu's left arm, probably, considering Wakatakakage was technically also going on the offensive.

Really didn't expect Terunofuji to give up his first kinboshi today. Good effort Daieishou.

Ouch, Araiso was watching when Takayasu lost to Takakeisho in a fairly unbalanced manner.

Daieisho has just blown this basho wide open.

Not sure about wide open considering all of the five chasers aren't traditional title threats - maybe Okinoumi and Endo, but that's as dangerous as they get. When you consider that other than Terunofuji, Mitakeumi and Shodai are the ones leading the sanyaku from two behind, Terunofuji still has to be the favourite for the yusho.

Now if Shodai and Mitakeumi succeed in beating Terunofuji then that really blows the door off its hinges. Chiyonokuni M17 yusho (from a "could have been in juryo this basho" position too) anyone?

I may be reading the chart incorrectly but it looks as though there are two ozeki taking part. So why is Akinoumi listed as YO (yokozuna-ozeki).

If you look you will see there were no designated East Ozeki for that tournament. For some reason Nayoroiwa is listed as a haridashi, or overhang on the banzuke, so Akinoumi needed to be a YO so there was an Ozeki on the East side.

Okay, found it in Twitter. Very nice. Not as clean as my OCD demands but an exciting finish nonetheless.

And Daieisho!!! We have a basho.

You're telling me you're not feeling an Onosho yusho right about now?

I'd put more money on an Okinoumi or Endo yusho, in all seriousness. Or, given the wackiness of the past year and that it's Wacki Aki, even Chiyonokuni!

Chiyonokuni is in the lucky M17 spot, for what it's worth.
