In the race for the unofficial "most wins in the calendar year" title, I have Terunofuji 15 clear of the field with 25 matches to go:

54 Terunofuji

39 Mitakeumi, Shodai

37 Ichinojo, Takayasu, Kotonowaka

36 Meisei

35 Daieisho, Hoshoryu

34 Kiribayama

I think Teru will have this one wrapped up by the end of the basho.

With the way Terunofuji is going I expect him to wrap up the November yusho by the end of this basho. He’s like a machine and I just don’t see anyone beating him at this point. Maybe Shodai?

Wow, not even Hakuho had the November basho wrapped up in mid-September!

Terunofuji is just THAT good right now. If he keeps up his current pace I expect him to have the first three yusho of 2022 in the bag by the end of the year.

And also, his current competition is THAT mediocre.

With Delgerbayar turning pro and Oshoumi showing good sumo as he climbs the ranks, Oshoryu might be only the 3rd best sekitori prospect at Naruto now.

Oshoumi has been a pleasant surprise to me.  Isn't he (and Murayama) part of that Sumo club with the Curry commercials?

Ichinojou will have good and bad days till he retires, Sekiwake and some M8 there as well. Forget about using his shikona and breakthrough basho in the same breath. World Champion in synchronized walking backwards.

Kaisei and Aoiyama - They're the same guy, but Kaisei is ranked lower most of the time. Their fighting style is totally different, but they're the same guy. They get excellent wins out of nowhere, and then lose too easily.

Those 3 are the same guy then (Eek...)

Or 6, considering the A/B versions...

He is - Kaiyo High in Niigata. It's got a strong sumo program and the top collegiate rikishi at the moment is from there too.

Day 6, now we are in the chuubansen and the kesho mawashi change. In juryo only about half have received enough to change, apparently.

I'm waiting for Terunofuji to use the Nagatanien set, I hope he got three sets, one for each five day group, jobansen first and then the shuubansen.

Hidenoumi is now joint leader for most ever ushiromotare, with 2. can he pull off another?

AKA pushing out your opponent with your butt, according to one of Kintamayama's old videos.

Someone should check the video archive to see if he managed a win with each cheek or whether he favours a ‘grip’ on one particular side. Hidari-buttsu? Migi-buttsu?

If he's gone one from each side, then what happens for his third? Ass-crack-tsu?

Only Day 6 I know, but that's got to be some kind of variety - one of the co-leaders knocked off by a juyro visitor.

So maybe he has 4 sets, together with the very old sword he got with his tachi, we can say that Terunofuji has a bunch of wealthy supporters.

Unfortunately, nothing about the other sets and not more about the tachi in the news so far.

The last two wins by Ura were very entertaining.  He made me smile.  Arigato.

Eek. After two wins in two days suggested he may have overcome his early difficulties, Takakeisho drops another and is now halfway to demotion. He can only afford three more losses over the remaining 10 days. I don’t rate his chances. Wakatakakage tomorrow.

Hidenoumi’s bewilderment continues on day 6 when he falls victim to ashitoshi by Terutsuyoshi who just disappeared into thin air in front of the hapless one before hooking his leg and pushing him off balance and back. It was actually recorded, correctly I might add, as a last minute yorikiri. Either way, the look on Hidenoumi’s face was his usual “WTF?”

I wouldn't want to jump the gun, but I'd say Kiribayama is 3 wins away from a gino-sho.

Someone else is in Takakeisho's body.  He seems to be demotion bound.

Another Yusho for Terunofuji seems like a sure bet at this point, especially, after Chiyonokuni's loss today.   I am hoping for Mitakeumi to keep pace with the Tyranofuji.  Otherwise, there isn't much to see in this basho.

I think Takakeisho is injured. His “wave” pushing attack just isn’t there. It’s his stock in trade. His more  or less a one trick pony, although his sidestep parry is also effective. Somethings up.

Gee, after last basho's incident where he basically stopped dead after running into Ichinojo, you think?

I wonder when's the last time we had a yusho decided before each day before senshuraku (i.e. when a yusho was decided by d14, d13, etcetc) and whether this basho is going to be yet another case of those.
