Seiyashi 4,071 Posted July 26, 2021 Update: The tsuna-uchi is tomorrow. Ajigawa just Tweeted a picture of hemp with the caption "it will be used tomorrow": I wonder if the NSK's YT channel will livestream it, or at least record it as they did with Kakuryu's.

Unfortunately, it's impossible to know what was in his mind at the time. If only someone had asked him while he was still ali -- wait, has anybody asked him? What an excellent idea! I just asked his friend, uh, Guuguru-zeki, and got the answer. Robot-translated: "For the dedication bale at Meiji Jingu on the 27th, select the Unryu type. The predecessor master (Yokozuna Takanosato) that I admire was a Shiranui type, but the Unryu type that "I had longed for a long time" was performed by famous Yokozuna such as Showa Taiho and Heisei Takanohana at Nissho Noseki Ichimon. rice field. My father, Sadahiko Hagiwara, "If you think about the balance, that's good." Said. Of the current 3 yokozuna, the only cloud dragon type is the crane dragon. If Kisenosato becomes the Unryu type, there will be two Unryu types, and each type will be divided into two." Source: https://news.1242.com/article/110883 (That crane dragon is of course good old Kakuryu, and Unryu is cloud dragon.) Now back to Terunofuji, over! 1

Think about what a scandal it would have caused if the Chosen One of Japanese sumo, destined to bring balance against the Mongolian Shiranui yokozuna, had instead left sumo in darkness by joining them in Shiranui! Slightly less facetiously, in every case where there were four yokozuna up until Kisenosato, there were always at least three Unryu - and in the famous photo of the five yokozuna, four were Unryu. Kise missed a trick to create the first instance of three Shiranui yokozuna ever. Maybe he decided it wouldn't be a good idea to break the Rule of Two. (I'm sorry, I'll show myself out now. Although you do have to admit that given the career necromancy Hakuho is engaging in, it is somewhat hilarious - as long as it doesn't wind up like IX where we all thought he was retired and then he comes out of nowhere to challenge #76 or something.) Apparently this wasn't for Terunofuji's tsuna-uchi (at least not yet), but Isegahama-oyakata's akatsuna-uchi. I've necroed the Asahifuji kanreki thread. That said, if Terunofuji is to serve as tsuyuharai, he should also be having a tsuna made pretty soon, maybe even today if Isegahama-beya's doing 2 ropes for the price of one keiko-ba setup. Further update: Terunofuji's rope was apparently braided earlier than Isegahama's, as Ajigawa-oyakata tweeted this photo two hours before the braiding of the red rope: Edited July 27, 2021 by Seiyashi
Seiyashi 4,071 Posted July 27, 2021 Asahi has plenty of pictures (courtesy of the Kyokai) from today's tsuna-uchi session at Isegahama, including of Terunofuji wearing his first rope. Here Satonofuji is tying the knot on a Shiranui rope once again. Isegahama teaching Terunofuji the dohyo-iri: Terunofuji trying it for himself: And a sneak peek of Terunofuji's dohyo-iri (the caption says that about 30 people from both the heya and the ichimon participated in the tsuna-uchi): 2
Seiyashi 4,071 Posted July 27, 2021 (edited) To avoid necroing an old thread, here's the link to the discussion about Harumafuji's first hono dohyo-iri at Meiji Jingu almost 9 years ago. It includes a fantastic collection of dohyo-iri from older yokozuna, including Futabayama's danpatsu dohyo-iri, and my favourite bit: a reminiscence from Orion who was at the tsuna-uchi for a new yokozuna and got to witness Sadanoyama and Tochinishiki teaching a new yokozuna how to do the Unryu dohyo-iri. EDIT: For those who may be interested, there is a compilation of yokozuna dohyo-iri by the YT channel Sumo Sumo Sumo. Tochinishiki's is at https://youtu.be/-lAY7I2OiIw?t=539. It's interesting to see the evolution in dohyo-iri styles. Purely as a matter of taste, I'd be happy if Terunofuji did it like Harumafuji - slower and more graceful, although some Forum sempai thought he was nervous as all hell. I can see how some of the more forceful dohyo iris like Asashoryu's and Kitanoumi's would be well-received in a honbasho context, but I think hono dohyo-iris benefit from a slower, more deliberate pace like Harumafuji's and Futabayama's (although maybe not that slow). Hakuryuho 334 Posted July 27, 2021 (edited) Here's footage of Terunofuji practising his dohyo-iri! Also a picture of a cheerful Isegahama-oyakata and the 73rd Yokozuna donning their new tsunas. Edited July 27, 2021 by Hakuryuho 9
Seiyashi 4,071 Posted July 27, 2021 Some highlights from the video: 0:10: Terunofuji looks like a kid on Christmas morning. 0:11: Atamifuji bowing with the braided tsuna. 0:17: Satonofuji, Harumafuji's former tsukebito and ex-yumitorishiki performer, taking charge in tying the ropes for yet another Shiranui yokozuna. Probably he'll be training one of Terunofuji's tsukebito as a backup yumitorishiki performer (Kakuryu's tsukebito, Shohoryu, is the current performer, having taken over from Kasugaryu, but Kakuryu's now retired already) and head tsukebito for the purposes of prepping the new yokozuna for dohyo-iri. 0:25: Isegahama-oyakata showing the chirichozu steps. 0:28: Terunofuji trying it out for himself, then looking at Isegahama for confirmation. I like the pacing of his chirichozu. 0:36: Terunofuji in the dohyo itself trying the whole sequence out proper. He looks like he's trying not to laugh: maybe he's looking in a mirror? That'll do that to you. 0:51: Sure enough, he looks off to the side and lets out a grin, sounding a lot higher pitched than he does normally.

Eikokurai 3,433 Posted July 27, 2021 These are great. He looks so much more relaxed and relieved than we’re used to seeing him during a basho. I hope he can wrestle like a man with nothing left to prove. It’s a good look for him.
Dapeng 232 Posted July 27, 2021 Seems Terunofuji does shiranui kata dohyo-iri? Shiranui kata yokozuna used to have a short tenure but this jinx was broken by Hakuho. Hope Terunofuji's will last long, but probably not. If Hakuho chooses to brave forward, he may become a lone yokozuna for the third time.

That makes Isegahama the first yokozuna shisho to teach two yokozuna deshi their dohyo iri. (The only other dobeya yokozuna with the same style were Wakanohana I and Wajima (but their shisho Hanakago wasn't a yokozuna himself) and Hokutoumi and Chiyonofuji (but Chiyonofuji taught Hokutoumi the Unryu dohyo-iri, not Kitanofuji)). But I guess that iteration of Isegahama-beya wasn't a standalone ichimon back then? Edited July 27, 2021 by Hakuryuho

But I guess that iteration of Isegahama-beya wasn't a standalone ichimon back then? No, Terukuni's Isegahama was part of the current Tatsunami-Isegahama ichimon. The ichimon was named Tatsunami-Isegahama, but became solely Tatsunami after Isegahama declined under Terukuni's successor, ozeki Kiyokuni (who, in fairness, went round the bend when his family was killed in JAL 123). That iteration of Isegahama was merged into Kiriyama stable in 2007 under Kiyokuni's successor, Katsuhikari, who later made the Isegahama name available to then-Ajigawa oyakata, ex-Asahifuji, who renamed Ajigawa-beya Isegahama-beya. However, as I canvassed yesterday: While Terukuni may have done Unryu, all Isegahama ichimon yokozuna since Yoshibayama have done Shiranui. In fact, I believe all Shiranui yokozuna since Yoshibayama have been either Isegahama or Nishonoseki (although Nishonoseki produced plenty of other Unryu yokozuna). So the tradition was arguably started by Yoshibayama rather than Terukuni.
