Or was he supposed to ceremonially take the last chip of stone out or something? The last bit is always done by the yokozuna himself (I guess the professionals tidy it up a bit afterwards)

Today Terunofuji had the engraving ceremony at the Tomioka Hachimangu: "I'm shoulder to shoulder now with the past yokozuna". Due to Corona it was not open to the public, Kisenosato had about 3000 watching at the shrine. Usually there also is a dohyo-iri afterwards, that was cancelled as well as a Corona measure https://www3.nhk.or.jp/lnews/tottori/20220809/4040012545.html Kisenosato in 2017: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKoI2N8CwAA I couldn't find a video of the yokozuna doing the chiseling, I remember one of Hakuho doing it Edit: the above local NHK news page now has a video that shows it vid Edited August 9, 2022 by Akinomaki 2

He has to chip off each of them. look at the above picture, below his two hands, the Haruo kanji each have one red dot. Once he chips off all of them, a professional will clean it up. I remember seeing the Kisenosato name engraved in the stone several months after his promotion, but before this ceremony and noticed the red dots. edit: from Kisenosato’s promotion ceremony On 09/06/2017 at 23:58, Akinomaki said: Edited August 15, 2022 by rhyen
