Swami Posted July 9, 2021 Posted July 9, 2021 A bit of a random one this, I know, curious to know if any of you have a favourite gyoji either past or present. The 27th Kimura Shonosuke (retired 1990), and the 28th Kimura Shonosuke (retired 1993) stand out for me, also the main sanyaku/ozeki gyoji of that time - was it Shintaro - his calls were very distinctive. Of current gyoji, around the mid-maegashira level - not sure who the gyoji is, but I love his calls of "Endo" and "Enho". Swami
rhyen Posted July 9, 2021 Posted July 9, 2021 The bearded one, who also made the correct call in the Taiho’s match that the shimpan overruled (incorrectly) leading to the video replay introduction. 2

Swami Posted July 9, 2021 Author Posted July 9, 2021 I didn't think this would prove so tricky! Swami
yohcun Posted July 9, 2021 Posted July 9, 2021 I like Kimura Kankuro (Yamahibiki) in makushita. He's got such a a great scream. Really puts his diaphragm into it. 2

I think he's my favorite too. His story was memorable enough, it inspired me and my friend to do a joke-photoshop of him off the clock. 1 1 1
Eikokurai Posted July 10, 2021 Posted July 10, 2021 Tough one. For me, it’s between Kimura and Shikimori, but I can’t choose which. 1 2

Presumably he's the same gyoji in the famous Tochinishiki - Ouchiyama bout (Tochinishiki winning by kubinage)? Swami
Swami Posted July 10, 2021 Author Posted July 10, 2021 This is actually about from 1984 Kyushu, but this is the ozeki/sanyaku gyoji I originally mentioned. He had a very distinctive call. Swami
WAKATAKE Posted July 10, 2021 Posted July 10, 2021 Obviously Kimura Konosuke, but I do like Kimura Tamajiro too. The guy took a fall during a match and somewhat finished it to carry on as if nothing happened 1
Churaumi Posted July 12, 2021 Posted July 12, 2021 I've got to throw Yodo some love, but Konosuke gets my hands down every time. 2 2
themistyseas Posted July 14, 2021 Posted July 14, 2021 Shikimori Kandayu - we love that guy! For avoidance of doubt, there have been many and I count them all 1
Stupidface Posted July 14, 2021 Posted July 14, 2021 Well I'm not exactly sure of his name but we call him "pig ref" as he resembles a pig - he frequently does the Ura bouts?? 1
Akinomaki Posted July 16, 2023 Posted July 16, 2023 Konosuke has a YT fan channel now https://www.youtube.com/@SumoKimura/videos a must-have for your mobile - for the alarm tone 1 5
