Ikioi retires

Recommended Posts

I was there as he was my favourite rikishi. The amazing thing is how different the vibe of the event is to how I imagined from always seeing these recaps/photos/videos on here. I'll do a more complete post later - curious though if anyone knows who the special guest performers were who sang for Ikioi (female) and with Ikioi (male)?

The merch booth was very impressive, although also very expensive as makes sense since this is a funds driver for his second life. I got a few things (washi, official program, postcard set etc) but found it hard to justify the Ikioi/tegata/Kasugayama beach towel at ¥5500 though I was very tempted.

Lots of soft cream on sale, nice for summer exhibition event vibes. A little sad to see it wasn't better attended though.

Yeah, she's very good, isn't she?

The song to that melody I'm most familiar with is 'World in Union' from the 1991 Rugby World Cup. I know I won't be the only one wondering where I've heard it before...

The whole ceremony hints at a very loved and respected rikishi.

I love to hear Holst at the Kokugikan, The Planets is a foundation of modern classical music and an inspiration for many movie soundtracks.

Until you have to play Mars four times a day for one week for school concerts, and want to kill someone, like me last week xD

I used to ponder the character of each piece in terms of the planets themselves; but Holst wrote this in ~1915, and astronomers knew almost nothing about their physical characteristics.  Weirdly (at least to modern times), his entire conception was based on astrological rather than astrophysical ideas.

Probably it's more inspiring to compose something based on astrology than astronomy. If Holst had composed the piece thinking about carbon or hydrogen, instead of greek gods and other stuff, the result had been quite different

What intrigues me is that there is a clear connection between the Greek myths and their observations (and naming) of the planets.  Mercury barely separates from the Sun at its greatest elongation, and is much quicker-moving than the other planets -- Mercury the god has these properties as the swift-footed herald of the gods.  There are similar identifications with the other known planets.  The astrological connections are a little more muddied, as those relationships go back farther into history; they're also mixed up with the zodiacal constellations.

As I mentioned, scientifically no one knew much about the planets in 1915: people still thought Venus was a dense jungle under those clouds, and the Martian "channels" (canali) were mistranslated as "canals" and led to War of the Worlds.  Actual evidence of the planetary surfaces wasn't known until the Mariner missions in the 1960's.  Also, I remember the Voyager missions had rough going through Congress because the planetary scientists admitted that for all they knew the moons of Jupiter and Saturn were just featureless snowballs.

To pick a nit: the naming of the planets reflects the Roman barbaric interpretation of the Greek gods.

TIL there's a vocal version of Jupiter with japanese lyrics. I love the melody in this song, so it was a fun ride to hear this take on it.

Too true.  To paraphrase someone-or-other: Roman literature is Greek literature in Latin.

This is very late for years. So, Ikioi's relationship with golfer Mamiko Higa is off, isn't it?

Yes, I checked on that as well, because I missed it at the time

Could be that with Ikioi retiring, Higa has no interest/intention of ever becoming an Okamisan.

I thought about putting it into commercial activities, but I think this thread is more fitting - the danpatsu-shiki appears in the video, also pics and talk about childhood: his dreams were to become a rikishi and a singer
