Asashosakari 16,374 Posted June 20, 2021 That disparate treatment of Chiyoshoma and Kaisei is rather puzzling. Hard to see what made them decide that Takarafuji deserved to lose half a rank and Tamawashi and Terutsuyoshi didn't. M7 Chiyoshoma (M11w 8-7) Takarafuji (M7w 7-8) M8 M9 Shimanoumi (M9e 7-8) Tamawashi (M10e 7-8) M10 Terutsuyoshi (M10w 7-8) Kaisei (M15e 9-6) M11 Kotonowaka (M11e 7-8)
Yubinhaad 10,101 Posted June 20, 2021 (edited) Fourteen shikona changes on this banzuke, a trio of which are from Musashigawa-beya. Tanahashi and Nishimura get their first shikona and are now Hinataryu and Kenshomaru respectively, while Ryubu adds the shisho's -maru suffix on to become Ryubumaru. He also adds a kanji to his given name. Two changes out of Asakayama-beya: Kaiyudai reverts to his family name Obara. Kaitoma is now Kairo, and also changes a kanji in the given name, but keeps the reading as Aron. (For the unaware, his full name is Mark Aaron Justin Toma) Tokiwayama-beya provides a sort of pick-n-mix shikona change, with Wakahiroto Arata becoming Aratakayama Hiroto. The new one is not Arata-ka-yama though, but Ara-taka-yama. And the new given name now matches his real given name, whereas the 'hiroto' in his previous shikona had a different second kanji. Clear as mud? From Shikoroyama-beya, Onagaya gets his first shikona by becoming Shuneikai - the first kanji likely honours his hometown of Kasugai in Aichi prefecture, while the second kanji is the same as that of his family name. He also changes the given name. Kogomaru sounds like it might also be a Musashigawa change, but in fact it belongs to Shikihide-beya's Katozakura. Over in Kokonoe-beya, Chiyosenshi changes to Chiyofuku, and I was all set to write that he was honouring his home prefecture of Fukushima. Except he's from Tochigi, so Oitekaze-beya's new collegiate recruit Sawadasho moves away from his surname-sho and is now Hitoshi; that's his real given name, but with the heya's traditional 翔 kanji in the middle instead. For some reason neither the Kyokai site nor Nikkan mentions a given name change, but fortunately the heya website confirms that he isn't Hitoshi Hitoshi - the new given name is Tadakatsu (忠勝, ただかつ). The two newest recruits for Kataonami-beya receive their first shikona. Hattori is now Tamatensho for his first basho on the banzuke, while Taguchi becomes Tamanotora for his second. He also changes the given name. Ms41w Obayama > Ohata (大畑) Ms52e Ofukasawa > Oshoumi (欧勝海) Sd24e Tanahashi > Hinataryu (日向龍) Sd38w Kaiyudai > Obara (小原) Sd74e Wakahiroto Arata (新太) > Aratakayama Hiroto (新隆山 洸斗) Sd82w Ryubu Taka > Ryubumaru Takamitsu (流武丸 貴光) Jd40e Kaitoma Aron (亜侖) > Kairo Aron (魁狼 亜龍) Jd43e Onagaya Kodai > Shuneikai Yuto (春永海 由宇斗) Jd58w Nishimura > Kenshomaru (堅昇丸) Jd94e Katozakura > Kogomaru (荒剛丸) Jk10e Taguchi Yoshiaki > Tamanotora Maro (玉の寅 麿) Jk16e Chiyosenshi > Chiyofuku (千代福) Jk19w Sawadasho Hitoshi > Hitoshi Tadakatsu (日翔志 忠勝) Jk22w Hattori > Tamatensho (玉天翔) One rikishi changes just the given name of his shikona, Shohoryu replaces Hikaru with his real given name, Shota. (For @Doitsuyama, Hikaru was the given name from the start of his career.) Ms15e Shohoryu Hikaru (光) > Shohoryu Shota (将太) There was also one shusshin change, for Jd15e Fujiseiun: Saitama-ken, Asaka-shi > Kumamoto-ken, Kumamoto-shi, Nishi-ku. 埼玉県朝霞市 > 熊本県熊本市西区 Lastly, Azumazeki-oyakata (former Komusubi Takamisakari) changes his given name too, replacing Daigoro with his real given name, Seiken. Azumazeki Daigoro (東関 大五郎) > Azumazeki Seiken (東関 精彦) Some small but mostly welcome quality of life changes to the Kyokai site happened at some point in the last couple of weeks. The heya guide pages now have links to all rikishi profiles, not just sekitori as it was before. I'm glad they've done that even though it renders rather pointless the hours I spent during lockdown last year creating my own list of active profile numbers to help with my shikona change posts. Toriteki profiles no longer have that ancient placeholder "No photo" photo. Next, but for some reason only on the Japanese side, the box showing each rikishi's recent basho results is now black text on white background. Personally I'd like to see the English profiles get that update as well, although people will have their own preference of course. Finally, retired rikishi now have their intai basho listed which is handy, but unfortunately their career data panels are gone, career win-loss records, yusho/prizes won and significant dates. Of course Sumo Reference contains everything, but I really don't see a good reason why they removed all that. Edited June 22, 2021 by Yubinhaad 3

Azumazeki Daigoro (東関 大五郎) > Azumazeki Seiken (東関 精彦) This one is sort of interesting, since Daigoro was inherited from Takamiyama, through Ushiomaru. Now that Takamisakari not stablemaster, maybe he no longer feels obligated to keep the given name.

Reonito 342 Posted June 21, 2021 This one seems more unreasonable and inconsistent than most TBH. As you say, there's usually at least one "why in the world did they do that?" but this time there are quite a few of those.
Asashosakari 16,374 Posted June 21, 2021 I don't know about that. As far as I'm concerned the only parts that are pretty far out are how Tobizaru and Chiyoshoma were treated, everything else I might feel compelled to complain about is a direct result of those two placements. I've thought much worse of several other recent rankings.
